PBR Spotlight Game: Lake at Delta

By Dylan Hefflinger

DELTA- Lake traveled for a non-league game against the Delta Panthers on Wednesday and the Flyers brought their bats as well as the wind with them in a 15-3 domination.

With the wind blowing out hard to center, Lake was able to capitalize in the first and never trailed in improving to 6-0 on the season. With one out, second baseman Casey Conine blasted a double to left and, after a walk, cleanup hitter Corey Hotmer began his huge game that ended with six RBI with a two-run double to deep center field.

With this being a non-league game, the Flyers opted to go with Thomas Nichols on the mound and the choice paid off. Nichols got off to a rough start hitting two batters in the first followed by a bloop single to right for a run and an error brought in the second run in the first. Nichols got out of the jam with a strikeout and settled down to go four innings allowing just one earned run, while fanning four. Nichols' fastball sat between 76-79, and hit 81 a couple times, but the senior was wild with his off-speed, hitting three batters, all on curve balls.

The Flyers, helped out in the win by eight walks and three Delta errors, took advantage of miscues by the Panthers in the second inning, scoring five runs on three walks and an error. The big hit of the inning was a two-out, two-run single by Nichols.

The Flyers then took control in the top of the fifth, batting around starting with a sharp double to right-center field by Nichols. With the bases juiced, Hotmer unloaded with a three-run double to left- center field and moments later scored on Jayce Vancena's second single of the inning for a 15-3 advantage.

Anthony Pratt came on in the bottom of the fifth inning to shut the Panthers down 1-2-3, dropping Delta to 0-6 heading into a game at Toledo Rogers on Thursday.

Lake looks to stay unbeaten on Saturday with a home doubleheader against 5-1 Wauseon.
