PBR Spotlight Game: London Badgers 18u vs Oakridge Reds Senior

London, ON – It was a great night for ball at the Byron Sports Complex. The Badgers 18u are scheduled to play about 90-100 games this season. It’s not just in the PBLO but also in exhibition games like these that help the Badgers 18u prep for multiple tournaments down south.

The Badgers latest action was against Team Ontario 18u in which they tied 2-2. Powered by one-run games all season, the Badgers looked to get their 4th win of the season on Tuesday night.

The game saw the Badgers 18u walk away with a convincing 6-4 win.

The Badgers would bat through the line-up in both the 3rd and 4th innings. Too many walks by the Reds pitching staff was ultimately the difference. Between both teams combined, there were a total of 12 walks and 11 hits.

On the mound for the Badgers was left-handed pitcher Travis Keys.

Keys was almost untouchable all game. Keys retired the first 9 batters he faced striking out seven. He used his curveball during many occasions and showed feel and confidence with the pitch. Keys would not need much help through the first six innings, although his team led 6-0. Keys had ten strikeouts on the day to go with three walks, two hits and two earned runs. He also showed off his excellent pick-off move and picking off two runners during the game. Keys would walk away as the winning pitcher.

Thomas Atkinson came in relief for Keys to record the final two outs Atkinson’s battled some control issues which forced the game to become closer than it actually was.

Offensively the Badgers were hot right out of the gate.

Saginaw Valley State University commit Jacob Mansfield led the way for the Badgers 18u going 2-3 with two walks, three stolen bases and one RBI. Mansfield typically stirs the pot for the Badger offence and on this night it was no different. Michael Mommersteeg also had a good day at the plate for the Badgers. Mommersteeg went 2-3 as well with two walks and three stolen bases.

The Badgers 18u showed great patience at the plate all game forcing Oakridge pitchers to battle and fatigue very quickly. Daniel Lichty, Jordan Ellis, Shane Barker and Lake Michigan College commit Troy Lofgren all added RBIs as well for the Badgers. Not only did the Badgers 18u show they could run the bases; they were almost perfect on defence as well only committing one error in the final inning.

The Badgers 18u are right back at it on Wednesday June 3rd as they have a double header against the London Bulls and Strathroy Royals Senior teams at Labatt Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00pm.
