PeeDee Regional - Two Way Player/Pitcher Only Spotlights

On Saturday, November 10th over 40 players descended onto American Legion Field in Florence, SC. American Legion Field is home to the 6 time state champion Florence Post 1 organization. With over 40 players in attendance, PBR ran a full pro-style workout, gathering information on each player in attendance.

Position players were up first, going through a full offensive evaluation that included a 60 time and exit velocity tested off a tee. Following these tests each player took two rounds of BP live on the playing field and recorded a home to first time off the bat.  When the offensive evaluation was concluded the defensive evaluation began with catcher pop times and fielding. When the catcher's were finished the corner infielders, middle infielders, and outfielders were given their turns to show their defensive ability. Each player had video recored of their offensive and defensive workout to be hosted in their profile.

The pitchers were the last to perform in front of the scouts in attendance. Each pitcher was given an individual bullpen session in which their velocity was measured and scouts dialed in on their arm action, mechanics, command, and pitchability.

PBR scouts in attendance were able to take stats on each player in attendance, while compiling evaluations on players that will lead to potential invites to the Preseason All-State, Top Prospect Games, the Future Games, and the Super 60.

Here we take our first look at the two way players and the pitchers from the event...

Cade Allen (RHP, West Florence, 2020)

The 5 foot 7 right hander has a compact frame at 140 pounds, but there is athleticism present. Allen possesses a shorter arm stroke and hid the ball well giving his 80 mph fastball a firmer feel. From the wind up, there is a quick rocker step to a balance point above the belt landed in line with the plate. Complimented the fastball with a slurvy breaking ball from 55-64. Struggled with feel for his offspeed offerings during this outing leading to inconsistent control with the pitch.

Thomas Faile (OF/RHP, Wilson, 2020)

5 foot 9 two way player with athletic build in the lower half and long arms for the body type. Starts with a forward hand set at the plate and exaggerates the load. Swing trended toward the long side causing him to lose barrel awareness on pitches in different locations. Short pro step release from the outfield with abbreviated follow through, OF velo 72. Liniar delivery on the mound reaches a balance point slightly above the belt and lands closed. Showed good control of the fastball and also a curveball with 10/4 shape that landed for strikes at 61.

James Laymen (SS/RHP, May River, 2022)

Medium/athletic frame and proportional build. Worked from the wind-up on the mound with a short rocker step into a balance point at the belt. Very simplistic delivery with repeatable mechanics. Landed slightly open with an OTT arm slot. CB showed some downer action and 11/4 shape. Erratic command of the pitch. CH was thrown with matching arm speed and fade, deception present. MIF, ran a 7.72 with an INF velo of 78. Currently a primary SS, profile suggests a move to 3rd or 2nd could happen down the line. Played confidently through ground balls with sure hands and smooth actions. LHH with slightly open stance and short stride. Relaxed upper body and naturally lofted bat path. Approach and ability suggest he could hit for power with future player development.

Daniel Camp (C/RHP, Dillon Christian, 2020)

Slender 5 foot 10 frame with room for additional physical development. Balanced stance and simple toe tap loading mechanism at the plate. Showed the ability to lag the barrel and create leverage on several of his BP swings. Will need to add strength increase bat speed, however, gap to gap power potential is present. Aggressive through receiving and quick exchange on throws to 2nd base. (2.00-2.21 pop range) Secondary RHP that commanded the bottom half of the zone with his FB during a bullpen session. Max FB of 80 mph with occasional run. Curveball was thrown with arm speed and 11/5 shape, landed consistently in the zone.

Hunter Herlong (3B/RHP, Lake View, 2020)

LHH infielder with 5 foot 11 frame. Round shoulders and thick lower half with strength present. Wide stance with exaggerated knee pinch inside the feet. Toe tap timing mechanism with a pre-set hand load and little movement outside of a barrel turn.  Flat path through the zone with some loft present. Worked at 3B and showed 71 mph INF velo with a long arm action. Choppy approach to the ball and stop and start footwork. Bigger rocker step into a high leg kick and long ¾ arm action landing slightly open.. FB showed ASR at 73. CB arm slot varied, slows the arm slightly (10/4 shape).

Mason Lynch (LHP, South Florence, 2021)

5 foot 11, 190 pound left handed pitcher/first baseman. Worked out as a pitcher only at this event. Longer leg length and compact torso. Rocker step into a balance point at the belt landing in line with the target. Got out over the front foot on his fastballs delivering the pitch downhill with ASR at 71 mph from a ¾ arm slot. Struggled to control a CB with 2/8 shape in the lower half of the zone. CH was thrown with matching arm slot/speed and confidence.

Tyler Warren (OF/RHP, The King’s Academy, 2019)

Medium frame with proportional length throughout. 7.03 60 and 4.47 home to first time. Balanced stance slightly wider than the shoulders. Hands set just above the back shoulder loading them down and back. Some stiffness to the swing, muscling the barrel through the zone. Stride foot landed inconsistently making it tough for him to get on plane and on time. Looked the most comfortable driving the ball gap to gap. Attacked the ball in the outfield using a quick pro step and long arm ation to carry throws to the target. Short rocker step to a balance point just above the belt. Landed in line with the target, OTT arm slot. Controlled the FB and complemented it with a CB that showed some depth and 10/5 shape.

Gabe Estes (RHP/SS, Pee Dee Academy, 2021)

6 foot 1 slender frame with length in the limbs and hands. Primary RHP, secondary SS worked from the wind-up to a balance point just above the belt. Used the lower half to generate drive to the target and get downhill. The arm action is clean and the velocity could jump with future development. Commanded the FB in the bottom half of the zone to both sides of the plate. 12/6 sharp CB was thrown with a shortened arm action bouncing the pitch several times. Also worked at SS with choppy footwork and long actions. Balanced stance and simple stride loaded him into his hitting position. Showed a low line drive bat path with negative attack angle at times. Recorded exit velo of 77.

Joshua Collins (RHP/2B, South Florence, 2020)

6 foot 4 with proportional length in the levers. Broad rounded shoulders will support additional development. Worked as a pitcher only at the event. Rotational delivery with balance point above the belt. Landed closed with a high ¾ arm slot. FB showed good life with run and occasional depth to the arm side. CH from the same arm slot with a slight deviation in arm speed, faded to the arm side, landed for strikes. CB with 11/5 shape was thrown with feel, + pitch potential.

Wyatt Smith (1B/RHP, Johnsonville, 2022)

Extreme length in a 6 foot 5  slender frame. At present still needs work with some movement patterns, frame suggest additional strength in the lower half and through the torso could remedy some of these issues. Open stance at the plate with high back elbow. Barrel falls onto plane but is inconsistent staying in the hitting zone. Balance point at the belt for the tall RHP. Landed slightly closed and showed high ¾ arm slot. FB showed ASR at 72 mph when thrown to the arm side. CB casts from the hand with 10/4 shape. CH as a 3rd pitch was thrown at 59.

Billy Ackershoek (LHP, Waccamaw, 2020)

6 footer with a high waist and rounded shoulders. Used a medium rocker step into a balance point just above the belt and linear delivery. Landed slightly open with a ¾ arm slot and flat plane. FB showed signs of ASR run at times at 71 mph. SL was shallow with side to side action, gave off a cutter first impression (63-65) mph.

Cameron Spates (SS/RHP, Lake City, 2020)

5 foot 10 medium frame with some strength present. 8.16 60 and 5.06 home to first times recorded. Worked as a middle infielder but profiles more as a 3rd basemen. Showed confident hands and simple footwork in the infield. Carried throws to first base from a high ¾ arm slot at 77. LHH with a slightly open stance. High stride, knee to knee timing mechanism, loads the hands down and back deep over the back foot. Swing showed a tendency to get long at times losing barrel awareness. There is some natural loft present and swings were confident. 78 mph FB on the mound from a high down and out leg kick and a controlled windup. Stabber on the back side with full arm action. Landed slightly closed. CB has slight downer action and 11/4 shape. Control was inconsistent on offspeed offerings.

BJ Williams (OF/RHP, Westwood, 2020)

6 foot 3 slender frame with high waist and long arms. OF velo of 82 using a quick pro step to carry throws accurately to the target. Tall, open stance with hands set slightly below the back shoulder and vertical bat angle. High stride timing mechanism loads the hands down and back, showed the ability to lag the barrel and generate some pop with several balls hit off the wall during his BP rounds. There is some length to the swing at times that could cause concern against high level arms. RHP with a balance point above the belt, landed slightly open with a whippy arm action. Rotational delivery was tough to repeat. FB had life at the plate at 80 mph. CB with 11/4 shape at 62.
