Game Recap:
Game 3 proved to be the rubber match in the three game series between Pitt CC and Catawba Valley CC, with Pitt using three home runs to power their offense to the win. The game was moved up to start at 11am due to impending weather later in the day, and that may have been the cause for a slow start as each team worked to find their spark early.
In the 4th, Pitt used a defensive miscue to push across 1 run and take an early lead. In the 6th, Chandler Blackwelder (INF, FR) homered to left, moving the lead to 2-0. After CVCC got one run back, an opposite field homer from Joey Goldsmith (INF, SO) pushed the lead to 3-1 for Pitt.
Later in the 7th, a one out single from Josh Netterville, moved a runner from 1st to 3B. As the ball was mishandled in the outfield, both runners attempted to move up. Netterville was cut down at 2B but the runner from 1st came around to score and move the lead to 4-1 Pitt.
In the bottom of the 8th, down 5-1, CVCC mounted a threat, scoring runs on RBI singles from Jackson Brown (OF, FR) and Trent Jones (OF, SO). With the tying run on 2B, down 5-3, Pitt turned to FR RHP Noah Jones who recorded a punch out to end the threat.
The game was put away in the 9th with the Bulldogs third home run of the game, this one off the bat of Garrett Tyndall (INF, SO). The final score in the 9-inning affair was 6-3.
John Owens (RHP, SO) picked up the win for Pitt with 6 innings of work, walking 1 and striking out 9. Jones picked up his 3rd save on the year working the final 1.2 innings. Trae Starnes (LHP, SO) was saddled with the loss. Starnes worked 6 innings giving up 5 hits and walking 1 with 5 strikeouts.
