Player Analysis: Team Purple from the Top Prospect Games

Previously, we release the complete statistical analysis from the 2013 Top Prospect Games. 

+ Alex Livingston, OF, Chaminade Julienne HS, 2014

6-foot, 170-pound outfield prospect with average frame. Registered a 6.79 60-yard dash. From the outfield, he uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Showed accuracy on his throws. Reached a top velocity of 79 mph. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts in an athletic stance and uses a short stride. Uses a choppy rhythm to his swing. Takes uphill path to the ball. Needs to work on consistently achieving extension in his swing. Reached top exit velocity of 82 mph off the tee.

+ Andy Fisher, LHP, Bowling Green HS, 2014

6-foot-1, 155-pound southpaw with thin, athletic frame. Throws through ¾ to high ¾ arm slot with long arm action. Delivery requires regular effort. His fastball sat 83-85 mph with cutting action. Also throws a 73 mph breaking ball with 2/8 break. Uses a 64 mph changeup as his third pitch. The pitch shows some fade, but he has a tendency to slow down his arm action. 

+ Braydon Focht, 3B/RHP, Northmont HS, 2014

6-foot-2, 180-pound two-way prospect with tall, athletic build. Registered a 7.42 6-yard dash. In the field, he uses long arm action through ¾ arm slot. Shows average footwork and glove work. Reached a top velocity of 78 mph across the infield. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts with a narrow, open stance and takes a long stride. Takes slight uphill path to the ball. Shows occasional pop in his bat. Registered a top exit velocity of 85 mph. On the mound, the righty throws through a high ¾ arm slot. Shows regular effort with tall and fall type delivery. Uses a slow rhythm with limited use of his lower half. Fastball sat 81-83 mph with some run. Also showed a 67 mph breaking ball and 74 mph changeup.

+ Butch Baird, LHP, West Holmes HS, 2014

5-foot-10, 170-pound southpaw that is headed to the University of Louisville. Uses quick arm speed and long arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Keeps quick tempo between pitches. Showed an 85-87 mph fastball with good sink to it. Relies on a 67-68 mph breaking ball with late 1/7 action. Shows good depth to the pitch.

+ Caleb Ferguson, LHP, West Jefferson HS, 2014

6-foot-4, 210-pound southpaw that recently committed to West Virginia. Uses quick arm speed through high ¾ arm slot. Delivery requires regular effort. Lower half tends to open early creating some command issues. Fastball reached up to 87 mph. showed a 65-67 mph breaking ball and a 75-77 mph changeup thrown near fastball arm speed. Has great potential if he can find repeatability in his delivery. 

+ Cameron Murray, IF, CHCA, 2015

5-foot-10, 140-pound middle infield prospect with small, athletic frame. Registered a 7.01 60-yard dash. Uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Registered top velocity of 80 mph across the infield. Will only get better as he shortens transfer. Shows softness in his hands and good angles to the ball. At the plate, the right-handed hitter shows a balanced approach. He uses a short stride with quick bat speed into the zone. Gets good extension in his swing. Doesn’t try to do too much as he uses the whole field. Will only get better as he gets physically stronger. Reached top exit velocity of 88 mph off the tee.

+ Chandler Day, RHP, Watkins Memorial HS, 2015

6-foot-4, 162-pound right-handed pitcher with long, lanky frame. One of the top pitcher’s in his class in the Midwest. Throws through ¾ to high ¾ arm slot with quick arm speed. Uses long arm action. Delivery requires some effort. Fastball sat 89-90 mph and got up to 91 mph on this occasion. Showed good arm side run. Uses hard 77 mph breaking ball with 11/5 movement. Two-plane, out pitch. Also uses a 79 mph changeup with fade. Tendency to slow down arm speed a bit on the pitch.

+ Corbin Dennis, RHP, Upper Arlington HS, 2014

6-foot-1, 185-pound righty with solid frame. Uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Delivery requires some effort. Fastball sat 81-83 mph with straight action. Breaking ball was 74-76 mph. When he stay on top of it, the pitch showed good depth and 11/5 break

+ Derek Varner, 3B, Turpin HS, 2014

6-foot, 182-pound prospect with solid, athletic frame. Registered a 7.1 60-yard dash. Uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot in the infield. Displayed good actions and a feel for his position. Reached top velocity of 81 mph across the infield. At the plate, he starts with a balanced setup from the right side. Hands start high before his load. Uses a short stride. Line drive type swing. Registered top exit velocity of 88 mph off the tee.

+ Eric Schrand, OF, La Salle HS, 2014

5-foot-10, 175-pound outfielder with average, athletic frame. Throws through over the top arm slot with accuracy. Showed average footwork and glovework. Reached top velocity of 74 mph. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts with a balanced stance. Uses a small load and doesn’t stride. Shows average bat speed (81 mph off the tee). Line drive type hitter.

+ Grant Macciocchi, IF/RHP, Moeller HS, 2015

6-foot-1, 150-pound two-way prospect with lanky, athletic frame. Registered a 6.9 60-yard dash. In the field, he throws through a ¾ arm slot with long arm action. Reached a top velocity of 78 mph. Took good angles to the ball and showed some softness in his hands. At the plate, he starts with an open stance. Uses a leg kick in his load, which creates a diving effect in his stride. Still shows good use of his lower half. Takes short path to the ball with line drive production. Registered top velocity of 84 mph off the tee. On the mound, he shows long, loose arm action through high ¾ arm slot. His fastball reached up to 85 mph with arm side run. Relies on a 68-69 mph breaking ball with 11/5 action and good depth.

+ Jarod Yoakam, RHP/1B/OF, Marysville HS, 2014

6-foot-2, 175-pound prospect. Likely projects best as a pitcher at the next level. The righty throws from low ¾ to ¾ arm slot with some funk to it. Shows quick arm speed and long, loose arm action. Fastball sits 83-85 mph with arm side run to it. Also uses a 68-70 mph breaking ball with 10/4 break. Deceptive delivery. At the plate, he starts with a side stance. Uses a small stride. Showed quick bat speed (86 mph exit velocity off the tee). Needs to work on consistently getting his hands slotted at load. At first base, he shows athleticism and a live arm.

+ Jason Suchanek, IF/OF, Beechwood HS (KY), 2014

5-foot-10, 175-pound infield prospect with average, athletic frame. Registered a 6.65 60-yard dash. In the infield, he uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Shows good arm strength with top velocity of 83 mph. from the outfield, he shows accuracy and carry on his throws. He plays through the baseball and shows fluid footwork. At the plate, he starts with a balance setup from the right side. Uses a short stride with a leg kick. Shows average bat speed (80 mph exit velocity off the tee). Line drive type hitter with pull tendencies in his swing.

+ Joey Thomas, C, Mason HS, 2014

6-foot-1, 187-pound catching prospect with good size and frame for the position. Registered a 7.44 60-yard dash. From behind the plate, he uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Shows tendency to open front side early, which causes some accuracy issues at times. Still, showed a top split time of 2.05 and 79 mph arm strength from the crouch. At the plate, he starts with a slightly open stance. Uses a smooth load. Uses a short stride. Shows quickness in his hands (89 mph exit velocity off the tee). Line drive type swing with some pop in the bat.

+ Joe Vranesic, RHP/OF, Moeller HS, 2015

6-foot-1, 190-pound prospect with solid frame. Registered a 7.31 60-yard dash. From the outfield, he uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Showed some carry on his throws. Reached top velocity of 83 mph from the outfield. Corner outfield type. At the plate, he starts with a slightly open stance and narrow setup. Uses a short stride and good use of his lower half. Takes a short path to the ball. Gets some lift with power in his bat. Registered a top exit velocity of 91 mph off the tee. On the mound, he uses a slight inward turn in his delivery. His fastball sat at 83 mph. He relies on a 67 mph breaking ball with 11/5 action.

+ Josh Petersen, RHP, Patrick Henry HS, 2014

6-foot, 175-pound right-handed pitcher with average frame. Uses a quick tempo on the mound. Shows average arm speed through high ¾ arm slot. Fastball sat 80-83 mph with slight run to it. Showed good command of a 68-69 mph breaking ball with late 11/5 action. The pitch shows good depth and ability to be an out pitch. Also throws a 72 mph changeup near fastball arm speed with similar movement to his fastball.

+ Michael Stryffeler, RHP, Padua Franciscan HS, 2014

6-foot-1, 195-pound right-handed pitcher with solid, athletic frame. Uses high leg kick and slight inward turn. Delivery requires regular effort. Shows quick arm action through over the top slot. Showed good command of fastball that sat 83-85 mph. Showed a 71-75 mph breaking ball with 11/5 break.

+ Nick Lubanski, C, Turpin HS, 2015

5-foot-10, 177-pound catching prospect with solid build. Registered 7.65 60-yard dash. Showed good catch and receive skills. Uses short arm action with accurate throws. Reached top velocity of 77 mph from the crouch and split times between 1.97 to 2.06. At the plate, he starts with a slightly open stance. Tendency to bar his arm in his load. Uses a short stride with good use of his lower half. Showed quickness in his hands (87 mph exit velocity off the tee) with uphill path to the ball. Pull tendencies in his swing.

+ Ricky Silvestri, 3B/1B, CHCA, 2014

6-foot, 180-pound corner infield prospect. Registered a 7.5 60-yard dash. Showed one of the top swings at the 2013 Top Prospect Games. Hits from the left side. Starts with an open stance and good balance. Uses a leg kick in his load and easy, smooth load. Takes short path to the ball. Consistently squared it up. Showed gap-to-gap abilities with some power. Reached top exit velocity of 90 mph off the tee. In the field, he showed fluid footwork. He made crisp, accurate throws with a top velocity of 74 mph.  

+ Rodney Hutchison, RHP/C/1B, Mason HS, 2015

6-foot-5, 225-pound prospect with big, solid frame. Shows potential on the mound and as a position player. Registered a 8.12 60-yard dash. Likely projects as a first baseman at the next level. Potential middle of the order bat at the next level. Starts with slightly open stance. Uses short stride with good use of his lower half. Explosive bat speed (93 mph exit velocity). Takes short, uphill path to the ball. Definite pull power in his swing. Behind the plate, he uses short arm action. Pop times between 2.12 to 2.15 with top velocity of 76 mph from the crouch. On the mound, he shows long arm action with quick arm speed through high ¾ arm slot. Delivery requires regular effort. Throws downhill. Fastball sits 84-87 mph with some life. Breaking ball shows 11/5 break at 75 mph. Tends to slow down arm speed on 76-78 mph changeup. 

+ Ryan Kennedy, OF, Hamilton HS, 2014

6-foot, 185-pound corner outfield prospect. Registered a 7.18 60-yard dash. From the outfield, he uses shows accuracy through an over the top arm slot. Throws down hill. Reached top velocity of 82 mph. at the plate, he shows a balanced setup with a smooth load. Takes a short stride. Displays a simple swing that generates solid contact. Takes a short, level path to the ball. Reached a top exit velocity of 85 mph off the tee.

+ Sam Montgomery, OF, Bishop Hartley HS, 2014

5-foot-10, 150-pound outfield prospect with small, athletic frame. Registered a 6.58 60-yard dash. Uses short arm action through high ¾ slot. Showed accuracy on his throws. Reached top velocity of 81 mph. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts with a slightly open stance. He uses a long stride with average bat speed (76 mph off the tee). Contact, line drive type hitter that uses his feet to help his offensive skill set.

+ Thane Walton, RHP/1B, Sandusky Perkins HS, 2014

6-foot-2, 185-pound two-way prospect with tall, solid frame. Registered a 7.87 60-yard dash. Moves well around the bag. Shows feel for the position. At the plate, he starts with a tall stance. Hands start high. Uses a short stride. Generates above average bat speed (89 mph). Takes a short path to the ball with pull tendencies in his swing. On the mound, he shows the most potential for the next level. Throws with quick arm speed through high ¾ arm slot. Deceptive delivery. Fastball sat 84-86 mph with arm side run. Breaking ball sat 74-76 mph with late 11/5 action.

+ Wes Rickenberg, RHP, Napoleon HS, 2014

6-foot-2, 160-pound righty. Throws with short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Delivery requires regular effort. Shows good command of 80-82 mph fastball with some sink to it. Relies on 72-73 mph with late 11/5 action. Throws his fastball and breaking ball out of the same tunnel. His breaking ball showed the ability to be a consistent out pitch at the next level.
