Power 25 Ranking: Week 3

Toby Bicknell
Texas Scouting Director

TEXAS, USA - Three weeks in and there is plenty of movement among the Power 25. The tournament season allows high school coaches to evaluate their clubs from top to bottom, with many playing six games in three days. In the first three weeks of the season, you can start to see pitching depth emerge, as well as a teams ability to score runs consistently, and clubs that simply “find a way” to win. Although ranking the Top 25 Teams in Texas is never going to be easy, our aim is to bring you the most comprehensive coverage with our “boots on the ground” scouting staff.

#1 Colleyville Heritage
The Panthers remain at number one after taking their show on the road to Lubbock and coming away with 5 wins. They beat Coronado, Cooper, and Frenship this week.

#2 Argyle
Coach Griffin put together a challenging schedule this week and the Eagles made it through the gauntlet of top teams with a 5-1 record, coming from behind in 4 of those 5 wins. They saw three of the top left-handers in the state, and you have to feel good about these guys moving forward in 4A.

#3 Lake Travis
The Cav’s only played one game this past week and won 9-2.

#4 Cypress Ranch
The Mustangs went 6-0 this week with wins over Langham Creek, LaPorte, Pearland and Episcopal. Front line arms are gonna give these guys a chance to win every game they play, especially when they only have two or three games in a week, they can stack the bullpen.

#5 Georgetown
The Eagles traveled to the Metroplex this week and went 4-2 against some of the best competition in the state. After seeing these guys in person, you have to like the energy and momentum that this club is playing with.

Moving up

College Station goes from 8 to 6 after going 5-1 this week. The pitching staff threw 4 shutouts, and they outscored opponents 63-8.

Moving from 14 to 8 is Veterans Memorial after going 6-1 including a huge conference win over Moody last week.

Calallen went 4-1 moving up from 15-9  with a huge win over McAllen on Sunday. They stay above McAllen with the head to head win.

Prosper jumps from 20 to 12 with a 5-1 week with wins over Keller, Sachse, Coppell, Flower Mound, and Guyer.

New Teams

Houston Memorial is now 12-2 after winning four games in a row. Their only losses this season are to Cy-Ranch and CC Carroll.

Byron Nelson enters this week at 12-3.

FW All Saints Episcopal is now 14-1 with their only loss coming at the hands of Prestonwood Christian. They beat Abilene Wylie twice and El Paso Coronado.

Buda Hays is now 17-1 with wins over Anderson, Boerne, Laredo Alexander, SA Reagan, SA Johnson, and Dripping Springs.

Liberty Hill beat College Station this weekend to move to 12-3-1. They also have big wins over Cedar Park, Pflugerville, and Goose Creek.

After seeing Wakeland this past week in person, my gut tells me that these guys have enough pitching and offense to win a very competitive Frisco district. Their overall record is only 11-6-1, but at 3-0 in district, these guys are our pick to click in what will be a very tough 9-5A district.

Bubble Teams

Gregory-Portland is now 13-1 after going 5-0 in San Antonio last week.

District 6-6A has three teams to watch in Coppell, Flower Mound and Marcus. This district will sort itself out during the regular season, but Coppell and Flower Mound both had tough weeks. The pitching edge is going to Flower Mound and Marcus, but Coppell has the offensive firepower to put up runs.

San Antonio Reagan is now 12-4. Lindale is 9-3. Magnolia West is 10-3. Brenham is 14-3.

Don't count out Southlake Carroll. Their 8-9 record does not reflect any great achievements, but the Dragons went 4-2 this week with wins over Coppell, Flower Mound, Argyle, and Georgetown. As of right now, this is our sleeper pick.
