Power 25 Update: April 8

Steve Nielsen
Scouting Supervisor - Wisconsin/Illinois

Two full weeks in the books full of relatively moderate Wisconsin spring weather gives us a chance to give the Power 25 Rankings our first update. Several of the state’s top teams have played at least four games and plenty of opportunity to see who they really are.

CREAM OF THE CROP

Among the top five, No. 1 Waunakee stays atop the state as they came out of the gates with a dramatic opening day win over No. 7 Sun Prairie in walk-off fashion and cruise to a 5-0 record on the early season.

Janesville Craig (4-0) takes an unblemished record up a spot to No. 2 as Kimberly (3-1) falls to No. 3 after splitting a double header with then No. 7 Sun Prairie over the weekend.

Arrowhead stays put at No. 4. The Warhawks are clearly talented and has two Power 25 wins already on the resume. The only blemish comes at the hands of conference foe No. 12 Catholic Memorial which they avenged later in the week.

TRENDING UP

The top Division 2 team, Waupun takes a couple steps up to No.6 in the state. The defending D2 champs know how to win and are already 5-0 with two walk-off wins.

No. 12 Franklin got off to a quick 4-0 start including a win over a no. 17 Muskego team.

No. 9 Oak Creek has taken to spring baseball rather well in the early going. Currently, the top ranked team making the transition to spring, the Knights are 4-0 with a win over then No. 15 Brookfield East. Oak Creek will have their work cut out for them over the next three weeks in conference play with three game sets against No. 11 Kenosha Bradford, No. 12 Franklin and No. 13 Kenosha Indian Trail.

DOWN BUT NOT OUT

Stevens Point (1-1) slid a couple spots to No. 7 after splitting their opening double header with De Pere, who has now cracked the Power 25.

No 14 Burlington pitching is off to a red hot start, tossing two no-hitters in their first two games. Unfortunately only a 1-1 record to show for it, after losing a walk off to Indian Trail in their opener. Indian Trail scored all three runs in the bottom of the seventh, without the benefit of a hit.

No. 15 Sun Prairie (2-3) is taking their lumps early, as expected with such a young bunch, but their schedule to this point has been daunting to say the least. In the five games played, three have been against the top two Preseason Power 25 teams in the state, No. 1 Waunakee and No. 2 Kimberly. Losing to Waunakee via a walk-off home run, and losing to Kimberly in 9 innings to split a double header. While they do have three L’s on the record, the talent is showing they can play with the best in the early going.

Catholic Memorial drops to No. 16 after a 3-2 start. They split with No. 4 Arrowhead last week and got walked-off by Nicolet on Saturday.

WELCOME...

No. 13 Kenosha Indian Trail has been cruising through the Power 25 to open their season. Their 4-1 record features all Preseason Power 25 opponents - No. 21 Westosha Central, No. 11 Burlington and No. 21 Kenosha Tremper. They were the only of the three Kenosha schools left off the Preseason Power 25, and they are making us pay for it. They took twou out of three from Tremper last week after starting off with wins over Westosha Central and a walk-off win over Burlington.

No. 22 De Pere gets in with a 2-1 record, but both wins over Preseason Power 25 teams, a double header split with No. 5 Stevens Point and a win over then No. 25 Bay Port highlights their resume.

Wauwatosa East takes the last spot at No. 25 with a 3-0 record including a pair of wins over Preseason No. 15 Brookfield East.

OUT

No. 23 Bay Port (1-3), No. 15 Brookfield East (1-4) and No. 20 Milwaukee Marquette (0-3) have not gotten off to the starts’ they would like, winning a collective two games between the three. The trio all have the talent to win their way back into the Power 25 but after week 1, they are all on the outside looking in.

BUBBLES

Mineral Point (5-0), Prairie du Chein (5-0), Pewaukee (5-2), Middleton (3-0), Nicolet (3-2), Verona (3-0), Eau Claire Memorial (3-0), Eau Claire North (3-1), Brookfield Central (3-1-1), Jefferson (4-1), Madison Memorial (3-2), Holmen (3-1)
