Texas Power 25: Week 2

Toby Bicknell
Texas Scouting Director

TEXAS, USA - The High School Baseball season is in full swing in Texas. We have had our share of weather issues the past two weeks, but battled through the muck and mire with resiliency. We have a new No. 1 this week with the Lake Travis Cavaliers moving into the top spot. Tough to argue with a team that was has quality wins over Round Rock, Westwood, The Woodlands, McNeil and Kingwood Park in last week. Not to mention, the Cavs have a loaded lineup and a solid starting rotation.

BREAKDOWN

+ Southlake Carroll: Defeated Colleyville Heritage this past weekend and they have one of the most complete lineups in Texas.
+ Cypress Ranch: The Mustangs have the most coveted pitching staff in Texas, and probably the country. Although they have three hickups on their schedule, this team is loaded with talent.
+ Kingwood: They are young and have high end talent that could carry them a long way. Recently had wins over Cy Falls, Cy Creek, and Kingwood Park.
+ San Antonio Reagan: Since losing to Katy Taylor in week 1, they have won 6 straight, outscoring opponents 52-7.

ON THE RISE

+ Katy: At 6-0-1, the Tigers’ only Non-Win is a tie to Cy Ranch. This is a balanced, well coached team.
+ Tomball Memorial: Went 5-0 this week, only one quality opponent, but the staff and lineup are balanced.
+ Keller Timber Creek: New to the ranking, but they are 7-2 with a stacked lineup including Mateo Gil, Zackary Gregory and a handful of other athletic players.
+ Frenship: Only loss is to Power 25 Flower Mound, they have beaten Keller once, and Lubbock Cooper twice.
+ Midland: We missed on these guys. The Bulldogs are 11-2 after going 5-1 this week with four wins over El Paso Teams and one loss to Lubbock Cooper
+ Coppell: At 8-2 the Cowboys are young, but talented and they play a competitive tournament schedule.

FALLING OUT

+ Midland Lee is 6-5 and without Ace Bo Blessie until mid April.
+ Fort Bend Kempner is 3-5 and they are struggling to score runs.
+ Forney has two of the best arms in the state, but the offense has scuffled early.

ON THE BUBBLE

The list here is long and distinguished, there are over 15 teams that could be in the discussion for the Top 25. A number of factors come into play, most importantly, strength of schedule and pitching rotation. However, it is something we will continue to monitor as the season progresses. In the end, it will sort itself out.

+ Ridge Point: They are 7-2 with a front line starter and two quality wins over Cypress Woods and Tomball.
+ Katy Tompkins: 10-3 after starting 1-3, they have rattled off 9 straight wins.
+ Episcopal: 7-2-1 The Knights have quality wins that could get them in down the road.
+ Marcus: At 7-2-1 the Marauders have a strong strength of schedule but they still have a tough district to navigate. They did have quality wins against College Station, Plano, and Frisco Lone Star two weeks ago.
+Round Rock: One of the sleepers from our Preseason Power 25. The Dragons have a talented team, and a quality loss to Lake Travis, but they will need to make some noise to get into the Power 25.
