Pre Season Preview - Legacy Longhorns

Buddy Gouldsmith
Nevada Scouting Director

The Legacy Longhorns and Head Coach, Joey Lauria can’t wait to get the 2019 season started.  The Longhorns weathered a tumultuous 2018 campaign and look forward to the opportunity to erase that finish and never look back.  One has to applaud their perseverance, Coach Lauria has dedicated himself to his alma mater and is working hard to establish a tradition that will stand the test of time.  He has invested in the youth of his program and will likely start to see dividends come this spring.  His players have been honing their skills playing consistently together from last summer to present date. PBR Nevada took a peek behind the curtain during a fall Scout Day and would expect solid improvement moving forward.

2019 Outlook:  The Longhorns have a few upperclassman in Logan Berrier and Isaiah Buhecker that will play significant roles; otherwise, it will be a continued youth movement for Coach Lauria. Juniors, Zach Ahmed and Fabian Torres should stabilize the middle of the field. Ahmed is a fleet-footed, centerfielder with the ability to take hits away from the opposition.  Torres is a strong, physical, durable bodied catcher with power in his bat.

Sophomore, third baseman Aaron Lopez should see some time in the middle of the order as well Lopez is a stocky, strong hitter with a short swing and solid bat speed. Antwan Carruthers will likely see time on the mound as well as in the infield. Lopez's classmate, Brandon Carter is a lanky infielder with tremendous upside and Coach Lauria will look to bringing him along as well.

On the mound, there is no stand alone arms.  The Longhorns will rely on throwing strikes and finesse to keep opposing hitters at bay.  Senior, Logan Berrier may have as much arm strength as anyone on the staff with a fastball in the low to mid 80s.  Zachary Chin is another senior that could have an impact on the mound. Sophomore, Reece Alaniz is a strike thrower that relies on his downhill plane. Brandon Carter is a projectable right-hander that could see a jump in velocity come spring time. Antwon Carruthers is a reliable competitor with a three-pitch mix.  Make no mistake, Coach Lauria has faith in his pitcher’s ability to throw strikes and will change the look at any time to provide an advantage for the Longhorns.

Should the Lognhorns decide to employ the assistance of some of its youngest players, keep an eye on De’Jon Mitchell.  A freshman, Mitchell has been known to run his fastball into the mid 80s range and slick fielding, Richard Leon Lopez may surface as well. Christian Becerra is a switch-hitting infielder with an efficient swing from both sides of the plate. He may even see some time behind the plate if Torres’s services are needed elsewhere.
