On Saturday, February 20th, we hosted the annual Preseason All-State showcase at Lawrence North HS in Indianapolis.  A total of 78 players from across the state participated in the event

Below is a look at pitchers who participated in the event.

Top Pitchers

1. Chandler Ferguson, RHP, Lafayette Jeff HS, 2017: 6-foot-3, 185 pounder pitches from a high ¾ slot with quick arm speed.  Tall to fall delivery with easy effort and smooth rhythm.  Level shoulders, athletic finish.  Fastball showed run at 88-89.  Breaking ball has an 11/5 shape with late bite at 71-73.  Changeup was 75-79. High projectability, tons of athleticism. 

2. Chayce McDermott, RHP, Pendleton Heights HS, 2017: 6-foot-2, 167 pound righty pitches from a loose, high ¾ arm action with quick arm speed.  Good balance, easy effort with smooth rhythm in the delivery.  Good direction.  Fastball was thrown for a strike at 85-86.  Breaking ball was thrown with fastball arm speed showing an 11/5 shape with sharp break at 69-71.  Changeup was straight at 78-80.  One of the top uncommitted 2017 arms in the state. 

3. Jackson Smeltz, LHP, McCutcheon HS, 2018: Young, projectable 6-foot-3, 205 pound southpaw pitches from a long, high ¾ arm action.  Easy effort in the delivery with level shoulders.  Lands open.  Fastball showed both run and cut action at 83-86.  The changeup was 78-80 with occasional sink.  Good athlete. 

4. Mike Madura, RHP, Munster HS, 2017: Long, lanky 6-foot-5, 185 pounds. Long, lean frame.  Over the head pump delivery with a clean arm action.  Pitches from a high ¾ slot.  Lands closed, athletic finish.  Fastball sits in the low 80’s, touching 85.  Has some run on the 2 seamer at 78-79. Cutter was 76-78.  Flashed a potential plus breaking ball with an 11/5 shape and sharp action.   Changeup was 67-70 with some arm side run.   

5. Drey Jameson, RHP, Greenfield Central HS, 2017: 6-foot, 160 pounder pitches from a high ¾ slot with quick arm speed.  Loose arm action.  Regular effort in the delivery with smooth rhythm.  Uphill shoulders, stays in line.  Fastball was an easy 85-87 with run.  Threw a curveball at 74-78 and a slider at 77-79.  11/5 action with sharp break on the curveball.  Changeup has good sink with occasional run at 77-79.   

Best of the Rest (Alphabetical Order)

Kadin Abegg, RHP, New Prairie HS, 2017: 5-foot-11, 145 pound righty pitches from an over the top slot with average arm speed.  Long arm action with a wrap/stab on the backside.  Choppy rhythm. Fastball was up to 81, sitting 78-80.  Breaking ball was 63-66 while the changeup sat 70-71.  

Luke Adams, RHP, Crown Point HS, 2017: 5-foot-9, 160 pounder possesses a long, stiff arm action.  Slow, deliberate delivery.  Inward turn with the front leg.  Fastball sat 76-78.  Breaking ball was 65-68.  Splitter at 64-66. 

Max Bohrer, RHP, Zionsville HS, 2017: 6-foot-1, 190 pounder pitches from a short, high ¾ arm action.  Quick arm speed.  Good arm strength.  Fastball has sink at 82-85.  Breaking ball has an 11/5 shape with gradual break at 74-77.  Changeup was 71-72, backing in to RHH.  Also flashed a slider/cutter at 72.  

Eric Braughton, RHP, Indian Creek HS, 2017: 6-foot-4, 200 pounds, wide shoulders.  Pitches from a loose, high ¾ arm action.  Average arm speed.  Easy effort in the delivery.  Raw mechanics.  Fastball was 84-85, up in the zone.  Breaking ball sat 71-72.   

Brendan Bube, RHP, Lanesville HS, 2017: 5-foot-9, 165 pound right-hander pitches from an over the top slot with above average arm speed.  Long arm action.  Shows some effort in the delivery, choppy rhythm, head snap.  Fastball sat 82-83.  Breaking ball 69-71, showing side spin.  Changeup was 69-73 with occasional sink.  Also flashed a knuckle ball at 67.  

Owen Callaghan, LHP, Hamilton Southeastern HS, 2017: 5-foot-10, 170 pound lefty pitches from a high ¾-over the top slot.  Pitches predominantly out of the stretch.  Good balance with regular effort in the delivery.  Good rhythm.  Good direction, lands square.  Fastball was 79-82 for a strike.  Breaking ball has downer type action at 66-69.  Chaneup was 70-71 with occasional sink.    

Adisyn Coffey, RHP, Delta HS, 2017: 6-foot-1, 168 pounder pitches from a high ¾ slot with quick arm speed.  Regular effort with smooth rhythm in the delivery.  Simple mechanics.  Fastball sat 84-85.  Breaking ball showed gradual break at 67-68, erratic in the zone. Tendency to slow the arm down on the changeup (73-74). 

Sam Crick, RHP, Trinity Lutheran HS, 2017: 6-foot-4, 195 pounder pitches from a short, high ¾ arm action with average arm speed.  Has some stiffness in the arm.  Regular effort with some rhythm in the delivery.  Level shoulders, good direction.  Lands square with an athletic finish.  Fastball has slight run at 80-81.  Breaking ball was 70-72 with sweeping action.  Changeup was thrown with near fastball arm speed at 73-74 showing arm side run.   

Isaiah Davis, RHP, Ben Davis HS, 2017: 6-foot-1, 170 pounder pitches from a high ¾ slot with average arm speed.  Drop and drive delivery with rushed/choppy rhythm.  Fastball was 75-78, up to 80.  Breaking ball sat 64-67 while the changeup was 69-70 with some sink. 

Dustin Dowden, RHP, Lapel HS, 2017: 5-foot-9, 140 pounder pitches from a high ¾ slot with average arm speed.  Short arm action.  Regular effort with smooth rhythm in the delivery.  Finishes athletic.  Fastball was straight at 73-75.  Breaking ball was erratic in the zone at 61-64.  Changeup sat 69-71 with occasional run.  

Aaron Ernst, RHP, Carmel HS, 2017: 6-foot-2, 165 pounds, pitches from a short, high ¾ arm action with quick arm speed.  Drop and drive delivery with regular effort.  Choppy rhythm.  Fastball was 84-86, but a little erratic.  Breaking ball sat 73-74 with gradual break.  Changeup was 76-77.  

Mason Fisher, LHP, Northeastern HS, 2017: 6-foot-3, 175 pound lefty pitches from an over the top slot with average arm speed.  Inward turn in the delivery, hides the ball well.  Good line to the plate.  Fastball was thrown for a strike at 78-80.  Breaking ball showed a 1/7 shape with gradual break at 64-65; good pitch for a strike.  Changeup was 70-72 and kept in the zone. Pounds the zone.  Flashed a 69 mph knuckle.  

Joseph Graziano, LHP, Lake Central HS, 2017: 6-foot-2, 160 pound lefty pitches from a long, high ¾ arm action.  Drop and drive delivery with regular effort and some rhythm.  Fastball showed occasional run at 82-84 and kept in the zone.  Breaking ball shows sweeping action and thrown for a strike at 70-71.  Changeup was 75-77.  Also flashed a 2-seamer at 80-81 with some run.  

Drew Hensley, RHP, Bedford North Lawrence HS, 2017: 5-foot-11, 165 pounder pitche from a high ¾ slot, short arm action.  Average arm speed.  Regular effort with some rhythm in the delivery.  Lands closed with an athletic finish.  Fastball was 79-82 for a strike.  Breaking ball was 65-67.  Showed good feel for his changeup at 72-74   

Trent Johnson, RHP, Crawfordsville HS, 2017: 6-foot-2, 180 pound right-hander pitches from an over-the-top slog.  Changes arm action between long and short.  Rhythm is choppy.  Fastball was up to 84, sitting 80-82.  Breaking ball had some bite at 70-72.  Changeup was 70-71. 

Jake Lewis, LHP, Providence HS, 2017: 6-foot-2, 193 pound southpaw pitches from a loose, high ¾ arm action.  Above average arm speed.  Good balance.  Works quick.  Uphill shoulders, good direction, lands square.  Fastball was straight at 77-79, up to 80.  Breaking ball has a 2/8 shape with gradual break at 64-68.  Changeup was thrown with near fastball arm speed for a strike at 68-71, showed occasional sink.  

Austin Long, RHP, Bedford North Lawrence HS, 2017: 6-foot-3, 220 pounder pitches from a high ¾ arm slot with quick arm speed.  Stab on the backside of the delivery.  Regular effort with some rhythm. Stays in line.  Fastball sat 83-85.  Breaking ball has an 11/5 shape with sharp action at 71-74.  Changeup was thrown with fastball arm speed and straight at 75-78.  

Dustin McLochlin, RHP, Noblesville HS, 2017: 6-foot-1, 160 pound right-hander pitches from a high ¾ arm slot with average arm speed.  Short, loose action.  Lands closed, works across the body.  Fastball had occasional run at 75-78, up to 80.  Breaking ball was 61-66.  Changeup sat 65-69.  

Drew Minnich, RHP, Northwood HS, 2017: 5-foot-11, 185 pound righty pitches from a short, over the top arm action.  Simple delivery with regular effort and rhythm.  Fastball was straight at 82-84, up to 86.  Threw both a CB and SL, both showing good spin.  Changeup has sink at 69-71.  

Wendell Mosteller, LHP, Avon HS, 2017: 6-foot-2, 205 pounds, pitches from a high ¾ arm slot.  Slight stab on the backside of his arm action.  Average arm speed.  Rhythm is choppy.  Fastball was 76-77, up to 78.  Breaking balls has a 1/7 shape showing gradual break at 60-63; erratic in the zone.  Changeup was thrown with near fastball arm speed at 62-65.   

Sam Paddock, RHP, Lawrence North HS, 2017: 6-foot, 170 pounder pitches from a loose, ¾ arm action with average arm speed.  Good balance, regular effort.  Good line.  Works at a deliberate pace.  Clean mechanically.  Fastball was straight at 80-81.  Breaking ball showed sweeping action at 64-66, tends to slow his arm down.  Changeup was 69-70 with arm side run.  

Jake Pease, RHP, Carroll HS, 2017: 6-foot-5, 185 pounds.  Pitches from a short, high ¾ arm action with average arm speed.  Drop and drive delivery.  Fastball was 77-80, occasional run but mostly straight.  Slows the arm down on the breaking ball.  Breaking ball has an11/5 shape at 67-69.  Changeup was 68-70

Brandon Reid, RHP, Brownsburg HS, 2017: 5-foot-9, 180 pounder pitches from a drop and drive type delivery with some effort.  Full windup, over the head pump.  Long arm action with a slight stab on the backside.  High ¾ arm slot.  Fastball was straight at 80-82, touching 83.  Breaking ball sat 70-73 with gradual break.  Changeup sat 72-73 with some sink.  70-71 slider. 

Trevor Reynolds, LHP, Greensburg HS, 2017: 6-foot-4, 200 pounds; pitches from a short, high ¾ arm action.  Slow delivery with regular effort.  Fastball was 77-78 for a strike.  Slows the arm down on the breaking ball; 69-70.  Changeup sat 73-74.   

Justin Ruthrauff, LHP, Andrean HS, 2017: 5-foot-9, 165 pound southpaw pitches from two slots, best from a ¾ arm sling.  Works across the body.  Average arm speed.  From a ¾ slot the fastball was 79-80 with good cut action.  From a lower ¾ slot the FB was up to 76  but flat.  Breaking ball has sweeping action at 71-73 for a strike.  Changeup sat 67-69.    

John Sherwood, RHP, Lapel HS, 2017: 5-foot-8, 165 pound righty pitches from a high ¾ slot.  Short arm action.  Some rhythm in the delivery, good direction to the plate.  Lands square.  Fastball was up in the zone at 71-72.  Breaking ball sat 62-65 with slurvey type action.  Changeup was 67-71 with arm side run, erratic in the zone.  

Dillon Simpson, RHP, Westfield HS, 2017: 6-foot, 187 pounds.  Pitches from a long, over the top arm action with above average arm speed.  Choppy rhythm.  Shoulders work uphill.  Good direction to the plate, lands square.  Gets downhill on the fastball at 81-83 with run.  2 seamer has good run at 80-81.  12/6 breaking ball has gradual break at 65-67.  Changeup is thrown with fastball arm speed at 74-77. 

Brian Skelton, RHP, Westfield HS, 2017: 6-foot-2, 205 pound righty pitches from a high ¾-over the top slot with above average arm speed.  Has some stiffness in the arm action.  Good rhythm.  Shoulders work uphill.  Stays in line, lands square.  Fastball has some cut at 81-82.  Breaking ball was 68-69 with late break.  Changeup sat 73-74 with some sink and kept in the zone.   

Spencer Strobel, LHP, Avon HS, 2017: 6-foot-1, 190 pounder pitches from a high ¾ arm action.  Drop and drive delivery with regular effort and some rhythm.  Fastball was straight at 78-82 and thrown for a strike.  Breaking ball sat 60-64 with gradual movement.  Changeup was 68-71.  

Logan Young, RHP, Shelbyville HS, 2017: 6-foot-2, 190 pounder pitches from a short, over the top arm action.  Has some effort in the delivery.  Pitches predominantly out of the stretch, soft front side.  Fastball was straight at 78-81, touching 82.  Threw a 62-67 mph slider, missed down in the zone.  Splitter was 68-69.
