Preseason All-State Showcase: Past Pitching Standouts

Greg Williams
Pennsylvania Director of Scouting

With the 2019 Preseason All-State Showcase just two days away we thought it would be interesting to look back on the past six years of an event that began in 2013. Today we highlight six of the top pitching performances in event history.

+ 2019 finalized rosters & schedule    + 2019 pitching rotations

Top pitching performances

2013

The first Preseason All-State Showcase saw a pair of talented 2014 grads light up the radar gun at the very end of the day long event. 6-foot-5, 215-pound lefty LaRon Mitchell impressed with an easy, athletic delivery and a fastball that sat 88-90. Mitchell went on to Harford CC following his days starring at Susquehanna Township HS. The buzz in facility continued one pitcher later as 6-foot-6, 205-pound righty Adam Seibert stepped on the mound and began firing fastballs at 89-91. The athletic Episcopal Academy product went on to pitch at Hofstra.

2015

The third edition of the event saw a pair of right-handers shine that are still applying their craft in college. Trent Vietmeier (Montour), currently a sophomore at LSU, showcased signs of things to come with an easy mid-80s fastball out of a mature frame. A sophomore at the time, Veitmeier ended his bullpen with an 89 mph fastball. Current UNC Charlotte junior Matt Brooks (Spring Grove) also impressed on this day with an extremely easy, athletic delivery that resulted in a top fastball of 90 mph. Brooks has won 10 games over two years of college baseball registering 113 strikeouts.

2017

Current Kentucky freshman lefty Dillon Marsh (Lancaster Catholic) flashed an advanced two-way skill set in year five, but will likely be relegated to only pitching in the rugged SEC. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound junior at the time sat 87-89 and flashed signs of a curveball/changeup off-speed mix that should allow him to compete early on at Kentucky.

2018

6-foot-2, 205-pound righty Ryan Kutz (Lower Dauphin) turned in the breakout performance of last year's event. The Davidson recruit pumped commanded his fastball well at 87-88 with significant arm-side fade. Kutz went on to go 7-0 with a 1.17 ERA as a junior in leading Lower Dauphin to the state finals in 2018.

This year's event will include 52 pitchers taking the mound over the course of two days with a chance to be added to the list of the top arms to have participated over the past eight years. On a side note our ability to produce quality video to chronicle the abilities of college hopefuls has come a long way in just eight years time.
