Preseason Preview: Mishawaka

The Mishawaka Cavemen, led by Coach John Huemmer, look to build off a 16-14 season in 2012. Coach Huemmer returns five starters and two pitchers from a team that finished 6-10 in the extremely challenging Northern Indiana Athletic Conference (NIAC).

The 2013 Cavemen will be led by senior shortstop Sam Schrader, who has signed to play football at Butler University in the fall. Schrader, a two time NIAC All-Conference selection, batted .351 and knocked in 25 runs while also stealing 12 bases. An outstanding athlete, Schrader was also the Gatorade Indiana Football Player of the Year after leading Mishawaka to the 4A State Finals. Another senior who will be counted on in 2013 is P/INF Matt Carver. Carver hit .288 with 14 RBI’s. Carver will also lead the rotation after posting a 3-2 record and limiting opponents to a .208 average last season.

Other returning starters are senior Jarrod Laymon (2B/1B), and a couple sophomores in Murphy Jobin (OF/P) and Jacob Schmatz (P/INF). The Cavemen expect to contend in the NIAC but will have to go through Elkhart Central.
