Progress Report: Teagan Carey

Brett Thorney
State Scouting Director

PBR has had the chance to dig through the players and numbers from the past year, we have had a chance to see some players make some significant jumps recently. Today, we will be taking a look at a "Progress Report" feature that highlights players that have shown significant improvement in their game; whether it's on the mechanical end, performance wise, physicality or in the measurable statistic department. The "Progress Report" can be a minor improvement in recent months or a substantial transformation over time. Today we will be taking a look at '21 SS Teagan Carey (Chaparral)

2021 SS Teagan Carey (Chaparral) Oregon commit, last attended a PBR event back last summer as a member of Team Arizona at the PBR Future Games. He's such a well rounded player that his performance landed him on our "sleepers" segment post event. At the event, he had just started maturing in a wiry-athletic, 6-foot, 170-pound frame, Carey looked the part of a future middle infielder who had a shot to hit at the top of an order at the next level. His clean, confident hands stood out defensively along with a strong (85 mph) arm across the diamond with a quick release. At the plate, he set up balanced and loads his hands down and back before quickly working the barrel slightly uphill through the zone. Carey showed some controlled aggressiveness, and displayed some gap to gap power (91 mph exit velocity off tee) that we assumed would see an uptick in the future as his he started to fill out. Carey’s athleticism and projection made it easy for college's to follow him in the months after the Future Games.

Today, Carey had already started the spring making some improvements to his frame, gaining 10-pounds of strength. With the season shutdown, he has got to work in the weight room even more, coming in at 6-foot-1 190-pounds. He's grown an inch and gained 20-pounds since the Future Games last summer. We had a chance to catch up with him during training yesterday and his body was truly noticeably stronger, really showing it in the cage. Balls are jumping off his bat more consistently in the mid 90's with same middle approach. Carey was having a solid spring to start the 2020 season, hitting .375 while walking 6 times with zero strikeouts. His power hasn't come in game yet, but it's definitely there and something to build on in the future. He should continue to play as a solid defender up the middle as he hasn't sacrificed any athleticism. Look for Carey to make some more noise in the future.

Scouting Report

6/12/19

6’ 170 -pound frame with broad shoulders. Looks more physical than January event. Starts with feet outside shoulders, rocking into back side to load. Small stride forward to stay square. Middle approach, driving the ball gap to gap. Noticeably more bat speed with exit velo at 91 MPH. Good actions in the field with the ability to stay at SS. Arm strength at 85 across the diamond plays well from different angles needed, based on throws he makes. Footwork allows to work good hops and be in position to get rid of the ball as needed. 7.12 60.

1/27/19 – Uncommitted. 5’11 165-pound frame with broad shoulder and room for weight. Starts with a square, wide stance, using little weight shirt into back side and small stride to unload lower half. Hands work back, just off shoulder as body starts forward. Has enough athleticism and body control to add more movement and create more from body. Middle approach, that will hit for power as strength develops (83 MPH exit velo). Good internal clock, doesn’t rush. Brings ball to center after catch for balance and arm swing. Works to hops well, although can use momentum better to work through the baseball and to add playable arm strength. Arm is at 83 MPH across the infield with good carry. Arm works well with multiple arm slots. Has a chance to stick at SS long term.
