Q & A with Kentucky commit Austin Perry (2013 RHP, Collins HS)

By Chris Fuller
Kentucky Scouting Director

Austin Perry, a 6-foot-3, 170-pound RHP frpm Collins HS has committed to the University of Kentucky.  PBR recently caught up with Perry to discuss his decision.

PBR:  Why did you choose Kentucky?

Perry:  I chose Kentucky because I've grown up in a family that are big supporters and fans of Kentucky.  Ever since I stepped on a baseball field I've wanted to be a Wildcat.  I like the program, and I think it is the best fit to develop me as a person and develop my game as well.

PBR:  What other schools were you considering?

Perry:  Before I committed to Kentucky I talked to Murray State, Eastern Kentucky, Morehead State, and Louisville.

PBR:  Where did the coaching staff first see you play?

Perry:  The Kentucky coaching staff saw me pitch in Florida in the Perfect Game WWBA World Championship Tournament.

PBR: What role do the coaches expect you to play your freshman year?

Perry:  I'm a pitcher so I really just have to work hard and prove myself to earn a spot in the rotation.

PBR:  What would you consider your biggest strength as a player?

Perry:  As a pitcher, I would consider my strength to be my natural movement on the ball.

PBR:  Who has had the biggest impact on your baseball career?

Perry:  Roy Bailey, my high school head coach, has definitely had the biggest impact on my baseball career.  He has taught me everything I know about pitching since I was a little kid.

PBR:  Who do you play for in the summer?

Perry:  During the summer I play for Jim Wiley on American Legion post 37.

PBR:  What is your most memorable baseball moment?

Perry:  My most memorable moment would definitely be last summer, winning the state tournament with my American Legion team.

PBR:  Who is the toughest hitter you have faced in the state of Kentucky?

Perry:  I've faced some tough hitters but its not always the guy that hits it over the fence.  The tough hitters are the ones that seem to always get on base somehow.

PBR:  What are your goals for your senior season at Collins?

Perry:  My senior season is going to be a year to step my game up even more.  I'll get to play with a clear mind and not focus on which college I'm going to.  I can focus on helping my team to reach our full potential.
