Quick Hits: 2022 Top Prospect Games

Will Arnold
Arizona Director of Scouting

The 2022 Top Prospect Games was held at Hi-Corbett Field, Home of the University of Arizona Wildcats. After this event, the ’22 class looks to be loaded with potential and projectability. There are numerous legitimate two way prospects in this class, along with some future high end arms available.

Austin Humphres, LHP, Shadow Ridge
The ultra projectible lefty was up to 85 MPH with good downhill angle and a fastball that jumped out of his hand. He got uncomfortable swings throughout his outing, without anyone being able to get on time. His breaking ball is a work in progress but shows promise to be a future out pitch. He also was 89 from the outfield and ran a 6.96.

Ethan Hott, OF, Chaparral
Despite his smaller frame, Hott stood out the entire day with his tools and skillset. He barreled up multiple balls during the game play and has among the top in all showcase categories. His 6.68 was the top 60, with his exit velo (93) and arm strength (87) being among the leaders.

Derek Smith, C, Horizon
The 6’5 backstop was impressive during the pop times. He ranged from 1.97-2.07 and showed good carry and accuracy on his throws. The is some juice in his bat as well, driving balls into the gaps during BP. He blocked very well also, without his long legs being an issue.

Dillon Orr, RHP, Shadow Ridge
The big frame righty was up to 86 with late life to his fastball. He shows feel for a change up, throwing it in multiple counts and to both righties and lefties. His breaking ball is a little it farther away but shows flashes or it being a quality pitch.

Marcus Delgado, RHP, Canyon Del Oro
Fastball worked 84-85 and showed the ability to control the strike zone, filling it up with both his fastball and breaking ball. Fastball had arm side run and sink when down.  Breaking ball at 64-67 had good bite, getting some awkward takes. Delgado was also 90 from the outfield and had an exit velocity of 85.

Ruben Castro, 3B, Tucson
Had the most impressive BP of the day, consistently driving balls through the middle of the field to pull side. He uses his lower half very well and swings with intent, looking to do damage at all times. Castro was up to 85 on the mound as well, showing to be a real two way prospect.

Hayden Lewis, RHP, Chaparral
Lewis was up to 84 with his fastball and showed the ability to work to both sides of the plate with a lively fastball. Spun the ball well with his 68-69 MPH slurvly breaking ball. He projects well at 5’11 140 pounds with long limbs.
