- IRMO vs. BLYTHEWOOD -

Our scouts were on hand to see a big 5A Region 4 matchup between the Blythewood Bengals and the Irmo Yellow Jackets. The Bengals offense was clicking on all cylinders and got to Irmo starting pitcher, Aaron White early and often. The Blythewood offense pounded out 16 hits and 4 home runs in route to a 15 - 5 win in the first of the three game set. The Bengals would go on to sweep the series winning the second and third games 9-1 and 11-0 respectively.

John Lanier (1B, Blythewood, 2019) - strong frame with additional physical upside. Compact LH swing with a short stride timing mechanism that keeps the head still and stacks the weight over the back side. Showed the ability to lag the barrel and generate some power. Opposite field home run later in this game. Citadel recruit.

Josh Cowan (C, Blythewood, 2019) - durable 5 foot 11, 190 pound frame. Solid avg. catch and throw skill present with good drop and recover skills. Athletic ability will allow him to transition to a corner INF or OF position if necessary. Above avg bat to ball skills with developing power. USC Lancaster recruit.

Aaron White (LHP, Irmo, 2019) - slight frame with proportional build, could add strength to the present body. 3 pitch mix, will have to work off the breaking ball to show the fastball. FB has slight ASR at 74-78 mph. Curveball showed good 1/7 shape and tight break at times. Current left on left or middle relief profile. Winthrop recruit.

- ANDREW JACKSON vs. LEWISVILLE -

Braxton Elms (RHP, Lewisville, 2020) The uncommitted RHP wasn’t at his best against AJHS Monday, but he showed some grit and displayed a five-pitch arsenal from a three-quarters slot. Elms allowed just one earned run on three hits while striking out seven through 6.2 IP before allowing the next five batters to reach base. Elms’ four-seam fastball sat 82-85 mph with good downhill movement. His two-seamer was 79-81 mph and the changeup was 70-74 mph. He mixed in a nice breaking ball that spun tighter as the game went on, and flashed a slider which showed some potential. There’s room for improvement with the backside arm action and getting over the front side.

Griffin Gardner (RHP, Andrew Jackson, 2019) The uncommitted Senior showed great upside as he delivered a 93-pitch complete game shutout. Gardener allowed just four batters to reach base all night and struck out 10 Lions while sitting 85-88 mph with the fastball consistently – even hanging around 83-85 in the final frames. There’s a lot of potential here considering the delivery is effortless and generating most of the velocity from a strong upper half. With some mechanical changes to the front side action, Gardner has the potential to be a mid-90s guy at some point in college.

- ST. JAMES vs. SOUTH FLORENCE -

On Tuesday we took to the road for another region matchup between teams at the top of 5A region 6. St. James made the trip to South Florence and this game did not disappoint. Coastal Carolina recruit Ethan Salak took the ball for the Sharks and turned in a magnificent effort. He was countered by uncommitted 2019 Korique Rainey for the Bruins who turned in a great effort of his own. This one would end in a 2-2 tie after regulation and see St. James push two runs across in their half of the 8th inning to take a 4-2 victory.

Ethan Salak (RHP, St. James, 2021) lean athletic build with room to finish his physical development. moderate effort in the delivery work the fastball at 82-85 in the first and maintained his velocity throughout his outing. Showed feel for a sharp 10/4 slider at 75 mph when he needed it. Competitive make up worked through some walks and errors to get himself out of several jams. Coastal Carolina recruit.

Korique Rainey (RHP, South Florence, 2019) medium frame with proportional slim build. Primary IF and leadoff hitter for SoFlo. Showed a low line drive bat path and good barrel awareness at the plate. Turned in a quality start on the mound for the Bruins. Controlled the fastball in the bottom half of the zone and change speeds effectively with a 3 pitch mix of FB, CB, CH. FB was 79-81. Uncommitted.

- MYRTLE BEACH vs. HARTSVILLE -

Our last game of the week was another region contest that pitted two talented teams in a solid matchup. Winthrop recruit Garrett Gainey took the ball for the Hartsville Red Foxes and threw a CG allowing 2 runs while punching out 12. The Red Foxes were able to capitalize on 4 Myrtle Beach errors to take a 2-1 lead early on and then score the winning run in the bottom of the 6th after MB was able to tie it up.

Garrett Gainey (LHP, Hartsville, 2019) the lean athletic left hander still has room to add mass to a projectable frame. He repeats an easy delivery to work the fastball up to 85 and compliments it with a firm 2/8 slider that is thrown firmly with cutter shape at  times. The breaking ball gained some break and some depth late in the start. Winthrop recruit.
