Sectional Round Game Results

Weather postponed quite a few games yesterday (all of which are scheduled to be played today), but a teams few avoided the rain to advance to the state quarterfinal round.

Class 3

New Madrid Central 7   Scott City 1
New Madrid keeps their Cinderella postseason alive. After knocking our ranked Malden in the district finals, the Eagles upset Scott City 7-1. Jashawn McDaniel put together his second consecutive stellar outing on the mound, scattering four hits and allowing one earned run.  Timmy Clayton drove home three while Tripp Keane went 2-for-3 and Logan Frazier homered to lead the New Madrid offense. In the Class 3 quarterfinals, New Madrid will face St. Pius X (Festus).

St. Pius X (Festus) 14   Brentwood 2
St. Pius X advances to the quarterfinals for the first time since 1964 by defeating Brentwood 14-2. Taylor Wood silenced the Brentwood bats with a two hit complete game (five innings). Tanner Martin, Montana Kempfer, and Jeremy Cartee each went 2-for-3, and Thomas Welch went 2-for-2. Kempfer drove home four runs, while Welch drove home three and scored three to lead the Pius offense.

Fair Grove 1   Forsyth 0
Fair Grove scored a run in the top of the third on a solo home run off the bat of Deric Link, and he also picked up the win on the mound, throwing seven innings of shut out ball and striking out five to advance to the quarterfinals. Fair Grove will take on the winner of the Springfield Catholic/Cuba contest scheduled for today.

Lutheran North 10   O’Fallon Christian 3
O’Fallon Christian jumped to an early 3-0 lead, but Lutheran North responded with 10 unanswered runs to advance to the quarterfinals.  Starter Conner Buenger allowed just three hits and struck out eight in the complete game victory. Cameron Jackson had a 3-fo-4 game at the plate, with a triple, two RBIs, and a run scored. Bradley West chipped in with two hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Lutheran North will face either Palmyra or Hallsville, with a final four berth on the line.

Class 2
Holcomb 7   East Carter 1
Dustin Houart picked up the win for Holcomb, striking out nine and allowing seven hits, advancing Holcomb to the Class 2 quarterfinals. Hunter Swafford led the Holcomb offense with a perfect 3-for-3 afternoon, driving in three runs on a first inning sacrifice fly to get the scoring started, and a two RBI double in the fourth. Devan Medley put the game way out of reach in the top of the seventh with a bases loaded double, driving in three runs. Holcomb will face Chaffee in the quarterfinals tomorrow.

Chaffee 2   Valle Catholic 0
Chaffee knocked off Class 2 runner up in 2012 Valle Catholic, shutting them out 2-0. Cody Payne threw his second consecutive shutout, a two hit, nine-strikeout effort with no walks. A pair of squeeze bunts by Chaffee was the difference, with Devon Yahn and Cody Johnson executing and allowing runners from third to cross the plate.  Chaffee will face Holcomb in the quarterfinal round.

Billings 2   Purdy 0
Sawyer Hawkins homered and Nick Gardner, Nathan Smith, and Dawson Meyer collected hits to lead Purdy over Billings. Meyer also picked up the win on the mound.

Class 1
Oran 5  Cooter 1
Seth Ressel hit and pitched his way for Oran, giving Coach Wood and the rest of the Oran team another quarterfinal appearance, while saying goodbye to Coach Crawford, who is retiring after 36 years on the bench (last nine with Cooter). Ressel struck out five and allowed only two hits. He also scored the first run of the game, after leading the top of the first off with a double and coming around to score on an error. Ressel ended the game going 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Two third inning errors lead to three more Oran runs, and Jacob Priggle doubled home Alex Huering in the seventh, to add an insurance run. Oran will face Naylor in the quarterfinals for the third consecutive year.

Naylor 6   Bakersfield 1

Weather permitting; there will be a full slate of sectional games, with makeups and regularly scheduled games.
