Byrnes Rebels earn Inaugural Shipyard/PBR Showdown Championship with 11-1 Victory

2019 Shipyard/PBR Showdown Champions - Byrnes Rebels

The 3rd and final day of the Shipyard/PBR Showdown would have been a nerve racking affair for almost any other facility with rain in the projected forecast. However, with two AstroTurf fields, Shipyard Park was the place to be. Fortunately the rain wasn't an issue and the games went off without a hitch. The atmosphere was arguably the best of the weekend and the teams, who were nearing the end of their pitching staffs, responded with the best offensive day yet. Sundays offensive onslaught would see the winning teams pound out 28 hits and score a total of 34 runs with the avg margin of victory 10 runs. 

Prep Baseball Report - South Carolina would like to thank all of the guys at Shipyard Park for making this event a great kickoff to the high school season. All of the teams handled themselves in a first class manner and that can be attributed to the high quality coaches and parents guiding these young men. The modified round robin format would see the lowest seed in Indian Land take on Nation Ford who would then be reseeded and enter into the championship game vs. Byrnes. McBee and Stratford would be the 3rd and 4th seeds and play in the consolation game. 

 

Game 1 - Indian Land vs. Nation Ford
Roman Edwards (RHP, Indian Land, 2022) vs. Hogan Drane (RHP, Nation Ford, 2019)

The first game of the day pitted a true freshman in Roman Edwards against a senior in Hogan Drane. Edwards would get the best of this matchup throwing a complete game and striking out 8 while Drane would allow 4 runs in 3 and 2/3 innings with 2 Ks, he was lifted for Matthew Bieser who would allow 4 runs on 2 hits with 5 Ks. The Falcons would start things off by scoring a run in the first on an Xavier Cumbee SAC fly that scored Steven Johnson who singled to lead off the game and was moved around via walks to Causey and Bott. Indian Land would answer with a run in the second after a Tanner Chassereau single, Connor Burns walk, and Adam Morrison walk would load the bases. Trace White would hit into a fielders choice to tie the game up at 1. The Warriors would go in front with 2 runs in the 3rd and another in the 4th. Kyle Raynor would walk to lead off the 3rd frame and score on a Chase Dougherty ground ball that was played into an error. After stealing 3rd, Dougherty would later score on a Jay Hildreth Sac Fly. The top of the 4th would see Morrison walk and score on a hit from Raynor to extend the Indian Land lead to 4-1. Nation Ford would start to claw their way back into the game by scoring 1 run in the 4th when Cumbee was hit by a pitch and scored on a Jeffrey Maidhof double. They would cut the lead to 1 with another run in the 5th, Stancil would single to lead off the inning and come around to score on a Tyler Causey hit. Indian Land would put the game out of reach for good with 4 runs in the top of the 7th highlighted by 4 walks during the frame bringing the final score to 8-3 in favor of the Warriors.

* TOP PROSPECTS * 

Roman Edwards (RHP, Indian Land, 2022) Uncommitted. Young prospect with high upside. Turns the ball over with heavy arm side life. Locates well to the arm side running the ball under the hands of RHH from a 3/4 arm slot. FB 76-78 throughout his 7 innings of work. Mixed CB at 63 and CH at 64. 

 

 

Tanner Chassereau (RHP/IF, Indian Land, 2020) Uncommitted. Proportional player with moderate thickness in the legs and room for the upper body to catch up as he matures. Nothing flashy but has good feel for the game and competes. Collected 5 hits on the weekend in addition to throwing 7 innings. Maturation should give him more of an identity as a player. Swing produced line drives but the barrel was quick out of the zone at times. 

 

 

 

Trace White (SS/RHP, Indian Land, 2021) Uncommitted. Medium build with room for the addition of functional strength. Solid avg middle infielder with confident hands and natural instincts. Short swing produced several line drives on the weekend. Set up to spray line drives to all fields. Trending toward a high OBP guy. 

 

Xavier Cumbee (2B/OF, Nation Ford, 2019) USC Sumter. Lean athlete with more present strength than he lets on. Current 2B, is forced to play there because of the lacking arm strength. Elite high school speed, could be a base stealing threat at the next level. Middle oppo approach right now with the idea of using his speed to get himself on base.

 

Steven Johnson (3B/C, Nation Ford, 2021) Uncommitted. Medium athletic build with solid actions in the infield. Profile of a second baseman could trend him into a middle infielder or corner guy based on player development, saw innings behind the plate over the weekend also. Loose load with the barrel from an open stance, middle/pullside tendency with a lofty bat path. Released the barrel through contact when the timing was there. 

 

Bradley Bott (OF/LHP, Nation Ford, 2019) UNC Greensboro Recruit. Compact athletic frame. Runs well from the LH batters box and efficiently tracks balls in the OF. Headsy offensive player with feel for the game. Showed bunt for hit several ABs, had 3 hits against Stratford, and took several walks over the course of the weekend. Pitched the championship game for Nation Ford and was 82-84 with erratic control.

The story of the second game was the Stratford Knights offense. They would open things up with hits from five of their first seven batters and never look back. The Knights were lead at the plate by Dylan Stewart who went 4 for 4 in the game. A total of 8 Knights players recorded double digit hit totals including 3 from Dorio and 2 from Lott, Bryant, and Cudd. The Panthers run would come on a Clark Kirkley walk with the bases loaded. Connor Kirkley and McIver Wallace would collect the two hits for McBee. 

* TOP PROSPECTS *

Blake Marrs (1B/C, Stratford, 2019) Lander Recruit. Strong frame, present strength will give him plus power potential as his game matures. Primary 1B with fringe-avg footwork around the bag. Showed the ability to drive the ball to all fields, will need to clean up some of the swing and miss that is currently in the swing to maximize potential. 

 

Jace McQuillan (OF/P, Stratford, 2021) Uncommitted. LHH with wiry long frame. High hand set with some loose whip in the barrel. Inside out approach with an aggressive attack angle at times that can jerk the hand over the top. Grinder, several quality at bats on the weekend and possesses a skill set worth following. Room for additional development that would elevate the present skills. 

Matt Urbaniak (RHP/1B, McBee, 2019) Uncommitted. Uber long RHP. Not the best body control or the cleanest actions but is a sneaky good athlete. Adequate runner once he gets underway. Raw swing at the plate but the ball comes off the bat with noticeable carry.

 

 

Clark Kirkley (3B, McBee, 2019) Uncommitted. Stocky frame with raw strength. Will need to refine some things in the swing to move on to the next level as a hitter. (RHP also, threw a 2 hitter on Friday night.) Worked at both 1st and 3rd over the course of the weekend with the more natural of the two being 3rd. Good athletic ability relative to his size and build. Showed an advanced understanding of the strike zone all weekend.

The championship game of the Inaugural Shipyard/PBR Showdown was a highly anticipated contest with talented players all over the field. The pitching matchup was especially intriguing with LHP Bradley Bott going for the Falcons and hard throwing right hander Clay Cox countering for the Rebels. Both pitchers would make quick work of the other side in the first inning however the wheels would begin to fall off for Bott and the Falcons in the second. 5 hits and two walks later the Rebels had taken a 6-0 lead, the inning was highlighted by a Jack Thompson (2-3, 2 2Bs, 3 RBI) double scoring two runs. Byrnes would extend their lead in the 3rd on 4 walks and two singles, with Thompson picking up another RBI on a bases loaded walk. Tyler Causey would get the Falcons on the board in the 4th with a towering home run to the opposite field that would make it into the Wando River on a bounce and subsequently be "fished" out by some passing boaters. The Rebels would add another run in the 4th to extend the lead to 10 and Clay Cox (5IP, 1R, 7Ks) would slam the door and lead the Rebels to the first ever Shipyard/PBR Showdown.

* TOP PROSPECTS*

Clay Cox (RHP, Byrnes, 2019) Uncommitted. Physical utility man hit at the top of the order in addition to throwing the championship game for the Rebels. 88 mph FB in the first that topped out at 89. Settled in at 86-87 during his 4th inning of work. Quick arm and short arm stroke get the ball out of the hand with life good life from a HTQ slot. Durable athletic frame should allow him to log a hefty number of innings. Moderate effort in the delivery. SL is sharp and hard with late side to side action giving off almost a cutter feel. Profiles as a back end bullpen guy.

 

 

Jack Thompson (3B, Byrnes, 2020) Uncommitted. Physical corner infielder with a durable frame that should easily fill out. Solid defensive tool with solid avg arm strength and raw abilities. Pull heavy tendencies at the plate. Muscles the barrel through contact with gap to gap power present.
