Sixty-Eight Indiana Natives Currently in Organized Ball

Heading into June, a total of 67 Indiana natives are involved in Organized Baseball, from the Major Leagues on down to the low minors, as players, managers, coaches and uniformed instructors. 

Two more are playing in leagues outside the U.S. and there are two free agents and a former manager who could be back in Organized Ball before long. 

Major Leagues (16 players, two managers, one coach)

Clint Barmes (Vincennes) – IF, Pirates

Aaron Barrett (Evansville) – RHP, Nationals

Brandon Beachy (Kokomo) – RHP, Braves (60-day disabled list as of March 29)

Drew Butera (Evansville) – C, Dodgers

Kyle Gibson (Greenfield) – RHP, Twins

LaTroy Hawkins (Gary) – RHP, Rockies

Tommy Hunter (Indianapolis) – RHP, Orioles (15-day DL as of May 21)

Adam Lind (Muncie) – 1B-DH, Blue Jays

Josh Lindblom (Lafayette) – RHP, Athletics

Lance Lynn (Indianapolis) – RHP, Cardinals

Jarrod Parker (Fort Wayne) – RHP, Athletics (60-day disabled list as of March 20)

Jeff Samardzija (Merrillville) – RHP, Cubs

Jordan Schafer (Hammond) – OF, Braves

Drew Storen (Indianapolis) – RHP, Nationals

Gary Thurman (Indianapolis) – minor league outfield/baserunning coordinator, Nationals

Eppard (OF, Angels, Blue Jays, 1987-1990), Miller (RHP, Orioles, Angels, Blue Jays,

Mets, 1975-1981) and Thurman (OF, Royals, Tigers, Mariners, Mets, 1987-1993, 1995, 1997) are former big leaguers.

Stetter was a LHP for the Brewers from 2007 to 2011.

Six more players born in Indiana are currently in extended spring training and will begin play when rookie and short-season leagues begin play next month.  They are:

Nick Cunningham (Indianapolis) – RHP, Orioles

Nolan Earley (Anderson) – OF, White Sox

Danny Ayers (Columbus) – LHP, Orioles

Koby Kraemer (Lafayette) – 3B, Blue Jays

Christian Montgomery (Indianapolis) – RHP, Mets

Brett Wiley (Huntington) – 2B, Cardinals

One other Hoosier native will be in uniform this year in the rookie Gulf Coast League: 

Milt May (Gary) – coach, GCL Orioles.

May caught for the Pirates, Astros, Tigers, White Sox and Giants from 1970 through 1984. 

In addition to the 67 Indiana-born players in Organized Baseball, two more are active in foreign leagues:

Bryan Bullington (Indianapolis) – RHP, Hiroshima Toyo Carp (Japan Central League)

Jake Fox (Greenfield) – OF, Vaqueros Laguna, Mexican League   

Bullington (Pirates, Indians, Blue Jays, Royals, 2005, 2007-10) and Fox (Cubs, Athletics, Orioles, 2007, 2009-10) are former big league players. 

Another pair of Hoosier natives, LHP Clayton Richard (Lafayette) and RHP Cory Wade (Indianapolis), are currently free agents.  Richard, who pitched for the White Sox and Padres from 2008 to 2013, is still rehabbing after thoracic outlet syndrome surgery in February.  Wade, who pitched for the Dodgers and Yankees from 2008-09 and again in 2011-12, was released from a minor league contract with the Royals in late April. 

There’s also Eric Wedge (Fort Wayne), who resigned last year as Seattle’s manager.  Wedge caught for the Red Sox and Rockies from 1991-94 and managed the Indians (2003-09) and Mariners (2011-13).
