South Mississippi Fall ID: Quick Hits

Matt Miller
State Director

POPLARVILLE, MS - The South Mississippi Fall ID was held on Saturday, September 23rd at Pearl River CC in Poplarville, MS. This event was an open event that consisted of some of the top prospects from the 2024-2027 classes across all parts of Mississippi. These players went through extended pro-style workout that included batting practice using Trackman, ran the 60 yard dash using Swift Performance, and much more. Pitchers were able to throw in simulated bullpens during the workout and were able to get numbers and metrics. There were some players who showed up and continued to build off of prior performances, but there were also some new names who jumped onto our radar with a strong showing at the event.

Kicking off our post-event coverage for this event, we take a look back at some of the top performers and standouts from Saturday. Continuing over the course of the next week or so, we will release different statistical leaderboards for the event along with other pieces of content.

QUICK HITS

Justin San Miguel SS / 2B / Resurrection Catholic , MS / 2026

Showed up and showed out! Our first time seeing San Miguel at a Mississippi event and this young man is heading in a very good direction. On defense, the primary shortstop had polished feet with range, a strong accurate arm with next level upside. Once he stepped in the box we were already anticipating a solid round and San Miguel delivered. Using the whole field with a level bat path and power coming. This name will be circulating very soon!

Cooper Hooks RHP / 1B / Brandon, MS / 2026

Is another up and coming arm from Brandon. The rising sophomore is the younger brother of lefty Walker Hooks (Ole Miss recruit) and has the potential to be a very sought after arm soon. Hooks used very loose arm action with whip to generate velocity up to 85 mph on the day, good for an event high. The curveball was most impressive with 12/6 action, feel, and spin rates up to 2737. Look forward to seeing the big righty in the spring!

Tinnin Potts 3B / OF / Clinton, MS / 2025

Displayed some solid power potential on Saturday at Pearl River CC with consistent exit velocities in the upper 90s including an event high 97 mph. Potts uses a fairly level bat path with a middle to pull side approach and occasional launch. On defense, the primary third basemen shows a fairly polished glove, some developing footwork and can also play the corner outfield and hop on the bump if needed. Potts will also be available at our upcoming Border Battle with Alabama.

Nelson Barthel C / OF / Northwest Rankin , MS / 2026

A very solid catching prospect on the rise. The sophomore from Northwest Rankin used a quick and consistent transfer for pop times staying around the 2.0 mark with an event best 1.97. Footwork and positioning on blocks and bunts were polished as well. At the plate Barthel had a balanced swing, level bat path, and middle of the field line drive approach with exit velocities averaging around 90 mph.

Payton Smith RHP / OF / George County , MS / 2027

Is a young arm worth the follow. On Saturday the freshman from George County worked up to 83 mph which caught the eye of recruiters on hand. Smith still has plenty of work ahead of him developing his secondary arsenal, which the foundation is there, though with his frame and youth on his side look for the velocity to continue to rise. The next calendar year could be huge for this arm.
