Southern Nevada Underclass - Pitchers Analysis

Buddy Gouldsmith
Nevada Scouting Director

LAS VEGAS, NV – Something to keep in mind as you review the Southern Nevada Underclass Trials pitcher’s analysis is the head wind facing their performance.  With wind gusts up to 40 mph, the mound faced directly into the oncoming breezes. Pitcher’s velocities were directly affected by the wind as well as their breaking ball action.

’21 Braiden Galvin, RHP (Coronado)

Stocky, 5-foot-8 155, Galvin has a compact frame. He is an athletic 3-pitch mix that competes in the zone with his entire arsenal.  His delivery is upright with a short stride throwing from a high ¾ arm slot. Galvin’s fastball sat comfortably 75-76, topping out at 78 with run and sink. His curveball displayed depth and his changeup had solid movement.

’21 Jack Branham, LHP (Arbor View)

Compact, 5-foot-10 165, Branham throws from a ¾ slot with consistent arm side run to his fastball, 71-73. He maintains a slight cross to his delivery with some wrap to his arm action. He demonstrates a feel for breaking ball spin but off speed is lite.  He has a serviceable third pitch in his changeup, 64-70. Presently a soft lefty, strength and weight gains may result in improved velocity and provide a higher ceiling.

’22 Mason McCormack, RHP (Coronado)

Lanky, 5-foot-11 135, McCormack is a pitchability right-hander with a simple delivery, throwing from a ¾ slot.  His slot provides consistent life to his fastball and changeup.  The fastball ranged 72-71, while the breaking ball and changeup were 59-61 and 64-65, respectively.  His breaking ball was loopy but had consistent shape. McCormack has developing arm strength with solid feel for the strike zone and with size and strength increases should see velocity improvement, creating greater pitch definition.

 ’21 Jarrett Kenyon, RHP (Coronado)

Lean, 6-foot 135, Kenyon has a projectable athletic build. He throws from a true ¾ slot relying heavily on life over plane. His fastball was 75-78 with consistent sink. The curveball, 65-66 has sweeping type action that will play up to right-handed hitters.  The changeup, 67-70, has consistent sink and the steady release point provides solid deception.  Kenyon is a solid athlete that PBR Nevada will keep a close eye on because size and strength increases accompanied by velocity jumps could make him a front-end starter at the next level.

’21 Abraham Molina, RHP (Green Valley)

Projectable, 6-foot 145, Molina threw from an all stretch delivery with a loose ¾ arm action. He loaded nicely to his backside with some drop and drive aspects to his delivery, occasionally getting downhill. He had arm side run to his fastball ranging, 71-73.  His curveball was lite, but flashed shape and action. He maintained consistent arm and hand speed on his changeup at 64-65 arm side life.  Molina could be an intriguing follow with velocity increases.

’21 Ozzy Zawislak, RHP (SLAM)

Stocky, 5-foot-10 185, Zawislak is a thick bodied right-hander, throwing from a high ¾ slot with some effort to his delivery. He maintains a short tight arm circle with a short stride. He gets inside his fastball for some straight fade at 75-77. The breaking ball has depth, 65-72 with consistent effort and arm speed.  The changeup was mostly 64-66 with some arm speed and delivery deception.

’21 Julian Molto-Herrera, RHP (Bishop Gorman)

Strong, 5-foot-10 170, Molto-Herrera is a pitchability righty throwing from a high ¾ slot with solid zone feel. He throws with some effort to his delivery and will occasionally spin off his front side, but it doesn’t jeopardize strikes. His fastball sat comfortably 81-83 with consistent arm side life. The breaking ball displayed tight spin with depth and some bite. The changeup was 74-75 with consistent arm speed. Molto-Herrera is a 3-pitch guy with enough ceiling to see as a future rotation starter at the next level.

’22 Gavin Stevenson, RHP (Bishop Gorman)

Developed, 6-foot 190, Stevenson is a well-built right-hander that throws from a high ¾ slot with a short tight arm circle. His fastball topped out at 80, with a breaking ball 67-69 and changeup at 75. Stevenson has a solid feel for the strike zone with good pitch definition and size, strength, and arm action will likely profile as a reliever down the road if he continues to pitch.

’21 Austin Cates, RHP (Coronado)

Youthful, 6-foot 205, Cates has a thick frame. He throws from a high ¾ slot with solid zone feel. He maintains an upright delivery and will frequently spin off his front side. His fastball ranged 75-77 with some arm side run. His breaking displayed spin with occasional depth at 66-69. Cates showed a serviceable changeup 70-71. With a 3-pitch mix, body and effort lend to a ceiling in a relief role.

‘22 Tyler Avery, RHP (Bishop Gorman)

Large frame, 6-foot-2 205, Avery has the prototypical pitcher body with some mass in his lower half and room for weight and strength gains. His ¾ arm action is loose and whippy, displaying solid hand and arm speed. His fastball topped out at 81, but by admission had thrown the day before. His curveball had nice shape and occasional bite in spite of lite velocity. He showed some feel for a changeup that came in at 66-69. Avery is a projectable right-hander with a high ceiling.

’21 Michael Carroll, RHP (Faith Lutheran)

Lean, 6-foot-5 175, Carrol throws from a ¾ to OH slot. He throws his fastball, 77-78, from more of an overhand slot, clearing his upper body and getting inside the ball to create some fade-sink. The breaking ball comes from a similar slot with a tendency to back-up to his arm side. He has feel for his change but lowers to more of ¾ slot to release.  Carroll has the makings of rotation starter down the line with a consistent release and strength increases.

’22 Mason Neville, LHP (Palo Verde)

Projectable, 6-foot-2 175, Neville looks the part with a long-loose 3/4 arm action. His fastball sat comfortably 83-84, topping out at 86. He has consistent arm side life with solid shape and depth to a mid 60s breaking ball. He had feel for a changeup, 74.  Neville showed area control and throwing directly in to a stiff wind, it is easy to see him as a mid to upper 80s guy, maybe more in the near future.  A legit two-way guy at this point, Neville will not be uncommitted for long.

’22 Parker Vint, RHP (Coronado)

Sturdy, 6-foot-2 185, Vint is athletic with present strength.  He maintains the potential to have some low-end value on the mound with work and development. His fastball ranged 75-78 while the breaking ball and changeup were 66-67 and 70-72, respectively. Vint is another athlete with the capability to throw strikes. He has solid life to his pitches and zone feel.

’21 Dylan Dirig, RHP (Desert Oasis)

Wiry, 5-10 155, Dirig throws from a high ¾ slot with solid zone feel. His fastball topped out at 78 with area control. He displays solid shape and feel in a 67-68 breaking ball.  The low 70s changeup demonstrates that there is a higher ceiling in the fastball. The upright delivery and short tight arm action lends likely to future a relief role but his skill will play better behind the plate down the road.

’22 Kyle Kiernan, RHP (Coronado)

Athletic, 5-foot-10 145, Kiernan is an athlete who can pitch. The consummate position player with solid feel for three pitches with an ability to throw consistent strikes. In spite of a crude delivery he competes in the strike zone with a fastball in the mid 70s and mid 60s off speed. With steady work and adjustment, Kiernan has a chance to be a capable three pitch mix, innings eater type guy, but his real value is in the infield.
