TEXAS- A look at a strong group of catchers from around the state who's stock rising before the season came to an abrupt halt.

Jason Hawkins, C, Plano Senior, 2021
Hawkins, a Houston recruit, had a stellar day over the course of two games for Plano High, going 5-for-8 with a triple hitting out of the three-hole. The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder possesses broad shoulders with a barrel chest and some natural strength throughout, and still has room to add to the frame. Behind the plate he showcased quick feet and transfer with accurate, relaxed throws between innings, and was not tested during the first game before shifting out to third base in game two. A right-handed hitter, Hawkins sets up slightly open with an athletic base, loading the hands down and back with a short stride. There is some stillness to the hands before the pursuit on a slightly uphill plane, but they drive the barrel fast through the zone with some strength, and he demonstrated an ability to drive the ball to the opposite gap in delivering the triple. Hawkins will likely play a vital role in Plano’ success as a defender behind the plate, and providing protection for Foster at the top of the order.

Caden Mitchell, C, Celina, 2023
Uncommitted. No .9 ranked player in the state in the 2023 class. A left-handed hitter with quality all-around baseball actions. Advanced defender with athletic hips. Quick accurate arm. Quiet barrel with strong hands in the swing. High baseball IQ. Plays with presence.

Ryan Sosa, C, Port Neches-Groves, 2021
Uncommitted. The 6-foot, 185-pound junior catcher moves well, 7.31 60-yard dash, swings well from the right side with a low stance, long load, and explosive path, 87 mph exit velocity off of tee. Quick out of crouch, strong arm with carry at 79 mph, showed pop times from 2.00-2.18.

Walker Janek, C, Gregory-Portland, 2021
Uncommitted. Has really made a strong impression down south this spring, likely one of the best available prospects in South Texas. 6'0 Athletic backstop, with a simple setup and quick bat at the plate. Versatile athlete.
