State Chamionship Preview: 2A

By: Zac Bottoms
Arkansas Scouting Director

The 2A State Title Game is Saturday, May 21st at 10:00 AM at beautiful Baum Stadium on the campus of the University of Arkansas, with a matchup between Woodlawn and Junction City. These two teams are familiar foes, playing against each other in the conference play, and in the 2A South Regional Championship Game. Woodlawn in 2-0 in the match ups.

Pitching

Junction City will lean on 2016 LHP Hunter Brantley. Brantley has advanced pitch ability locating his 80-83 mph fastball on both sides of the plate. He compliments the fastball with a curveball with 2/8 shape and late break. If Brantley gets into trouble look for 2016 RHP Will Smith. Smith a physical player with solid arm strength and good secondary stuff.

Woodlawn will start 2018 RHP Will Richardson. Richardson pounds the strike zone with a fastball 84-86 mph with late sink. He commands his Frisbee slider at 71-73 mph with late break as well as change up with arm side run.

Hitting

Junction City A team with a complete offensive unit. This group is well coached by Joe Paul Hammet, staying to their approach and game plan given. RHP/C Will Smith will anchor the middle of the line up. He will Have to solve Richardson to give them a chance.

Woodlawn. This lineup is full of young talented players. A name to know is 2018 C Chance Johnson he is one of the more offensive players for either team. He has the ability to drive the ball to both fields.

Defense:

Junction City has defended well during their winning ways. Costly mistakes during the conference mathc up I attended. This could be the achelies heel for the Dragons.

Woodlawn. They are lead in the middle by 2018 MIF Matt Aiken who works through the baseball and shows a quick exchange and an accurate arm.

Road to Baum

2A
Junction City 10 Hackett 0
Junction City 8 Riberside 6
Junction City 10 Murfreesbor 2

Woodlawn 10 Hector 2
Woodlawn 3 Oauchita 2
Woodlawn 5 McCrory 1

Pick

It’s tough to beat a team 3 times in one season, however I think Woodlawn will take care of business with Richardson on the mound, and the offense of both sides will be stifled by good pitching.
