State Championship Preview: Classification 1A



1A State Championship Preview:

These games will be played at Radford University on Friday, June 13 with the winners meeting in the Championship game on Saturday, June 14, at 10:00 am.

William Campbell vs. Honaker, 10:00 am

William Campbell comes into the game as the East Region runners-up. The Generals’ offense carried them through the Regional tournament as they won games against Rappahannock and Matthews before losing a tight one-run championship game.

Honaker enters the game as the Crooked Road Conference and West Regional Champions. They carry a record of 24-0 into the game and have dominated their opponents so far this year, outscoring them by 180 runs over the course of the season. The Tigers continued their dominant run in the Regional tournament by shutting out all three of their opponents. The Tigers dominant pitching staff is led by junior Austin Ray, with seniors Hunter Meade and Mackenzie Phillips also posting strong seasons. Sophomore Avin Parrott has paced an offense that is incredibly balanced. Juniors Ray and Hunter Lester have also posted strong seasons for Honaker.

Auburn vs. Northumberland, 1:00 pm

Auburn has had a heck of a run in the playoffs. They enter the final four as the West Region runners-up, having been the Western Gate Conference runners-up as well. The Eagles upset Fort Chiswell and Eastside in the Regional as their bats carried them into the championship game where they were silenced by Honaker. Auburn enters the game with a 13-12 record overall this year.

Northumberland enters the game as the Conference 43 and East Region Champions, holding a record of 19-2. The Indians have been led by their offense, which has been clicking lately, averaging almost nine runs per game in the playoffs. Northumberland has been bloodied in the tournament, as they won tough games against Parry McCluer and William Campbell en route to the regional crown.
