State Tournament Review: First Round

Day one of the State Tournament was exciting with competitive games in all classifications. Several games took extra innings to decide, some pitchers had big days helping lead their teams to upset wins. Here is the review of the 7A tournament and some notes from other games across the state.

Cabot 4 Rogers 0

Cabot received a big performance out of 2016 RHP Chase Kyzer, as he pitched a complete game shutout. He located his fastball and mixed in a sharp slider to keep hitters off balance. 2017 C Denver Mullins had strong day at the plate to lead the way offensively. 2017 OF Greyson Lee solved the riddle that was Chase Kyzer picking up 3 hits, unfortunately for him, others didn’t follow suit. Cabot advances to play Bryant today at 10 AM.

Central 6 Southside 1

Central jumped out on Southside 4-0 in the first taking advantage of some miscues by Southside and road 2016 RHP Nathan Abraham to the win. Abraham threw a complete game. Offensively 2018 CIF Aaron Mann stood oud with 3 hits on the afternoon. Central advances to play Har-ber today at 12:30 PM.

Catholic 14 Fayetteville 7

Not the pitchers dual I expected between 2016 LHP Dylon Thompson (CHS) and 2016 LHP Joey Savin (FHS). Thompson left the game after 5 2/3 allowing just 3 runs. The Catholic offense took care of him scoring 14 runs with 6 doubles. 2016 OF Lance Harville Thomas lead the way with 2 doubles and 5 RBIs. Catholic advances to play North Little Rock HS at 3:00 PM.

Conway 1 vs Springdale 0

Both teams picked up outstanding performances by their pitchers. 2016 RHP Matt Strickland pitched 7 innings allowing 0 earned before being relieved in the top of the 8^th after a walk. 2016 LHP Collin Cahill was sharp working around the walk to hold the game 0-0. 2017 RHP Dustin Roach pitched 7 1/3 allowing 1 run 0 earned as Conway scored on an infield pop-up after loading the bases to for situational purposes. Conway advances to a 2015 State Championship rematch with Bentonville HS 5:30 PM.

Other Games

6A games we tightly contested throughout the day with none of the scores having shock value.

5A was upset central with 4 seed Pulaski Academy defeating 1 seed LR Christian 7-4 in extra innings. 4 seed Magnolia defeated 1 seed Greene County Tech 7-1 and Beebe upset 2015 defending State Champion Harrison 1-0.

4A went as scripted with the teams from the South Region taking care of business throughout round one.

3A was fairly calm throughout the day, Mayflower defeated Fordyce 2-1 in 11 innings. Not necessarily upset, Mayflower is the 3A defending State Champion, but 2016 RHP Ross Rodgers is considered one of the top arms in the 3A classification. Genoa Central and Harmony Grove played a solid 3-2 game.

2A Dierks upset Conway Christian 9-8, Dierks was a 4 seed and Conway Christian was a 1 seed, the rest of the tournament went as expected. A big match up today between Woodlawn and Ouachita.

1A solid of baseball with little to no surprises.
