The 2023 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Tennessee.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Murfreesboro at The Spring Fling as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Tennessee. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Volunteer State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each TSSAA classification as well as a Power 25.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook:

What can you say about the Farragut Admirals? Last season, they went 30-11 and captured the 4A state title, which is their 11th title in baseball (last one in 2019). They’ve been the perennial blueblood of the 2000s and it seems to be another Spring where they’ll have a large target on their backs. They didn’t have many senior contributors last season outside of RHP Jaxson Pease and C Garrett Brewer, so they’ll return a loaded roster with aspirations of going back to back. They have seven D1 commits in the upperclass, led by ‘23 3B Jett Johnston (Texas A&M). Since moving in from Texas, Johnston has been a big power bat in the middle of the order and can be a short relief option if needed. They have the deepest junior class in the state with ‘24 SS Lukas Buckner (UCF), ‘24 OF Brennon Seigler (Tennessee), ‘24 3B/OF Landis Davila (Virginia Tech), ‘24 RHP Stratton Scott (Tennessee), ‘24 CINF Eli Evans (ETSU), and ‘24 1B Charlie Bozeman (Samford). All those position players got significant time last year and Scott looks to bump up into the ace role. The next batch of uncommitted players are no average joes with ‘24 INF/RHP Jake Merrick, ‘24 RHP/OF Michael Delph, ‘24 RHP Michael Delph, ‘23 LHP Ashton Sulack, and speedy ‘23 OF Mark Underwood. ‘24 RHP Matt Heflin will be returning from Tommy John surgery while ‘25 RHP Reid Thomason, ‘24 LHP Ryan Wallace, and ‘24 RHP Braxton Lewis will figure into key pitching roles. Positionally, their only holes from last year is at catcher, where ‘24 C Gavin Brewer will step in for his brother, and one outfield position after ‘24 OF Jack Alley switched his focus to football. Matt Buckner might certainly have his best group of players with an uber deep lineup and a pitching staff that will roll out a plethora of options/different looks. I felt like this young sophomore core was a year ahead last Spring, but we got to watch them breakout in the postseason and put another “ball on the wall.” They will be a strong favorite to repeat in 4A, and as we’ve learned don’t ever count out the Ads.
