Team Of The Week: Impressive Beginning For Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN - An undefeated start to the season has not surprised Bowling Green head coach Jim Beaverson.

“We’ve tried to prepare different mentally this year with books and readings,” explained the second-year mentor for the Bobcats, honored as one of this week’s Prep Baseball Report Ohio Teams of the Week. “They’ve been pretty receptive of this.”

Seven consecutive wins is proof of that, highlighted by wins over perennial Division II powers Defiance (4-1) and Bryan (5-4) as well as Division I squads Findlay (9-7) and Anthony Wayne (4-2), last year’s state runner-up.

“I preach fundamentals,” Beaverson pointed to as what has stood out this season so far. “Defense and pitching.”

Tucker Craft, who will play next year at Capital, has not allowed an earned run in 20 innings with two complete games. The senior right-hander has defeated Defiance, Anthony Wayne and shut out Clyde.

Junior lefty Luke Roberts has given up one earned run in 14.1 innings for a 0.48 ERA.

“He’s got an athletic body and frame,” Beaverson noted about Roberts, a 6-3 170-pounder who plays outfield when not on the mound. “He’s on the border of being a D-I pitcher.”

Defense and timely hitting are other keys to success thus far for Bowling Green, which is ranked second in the state in Division II by PBR.

Second baseman Peyton Beaverson, the son of the head coach, has been “phenomenal” in the field according to his mentor with no errors to date. On Wednesday, clinging to a 1-0 lead over Maumee, Beaverson came up with the biggest hit of the game to increase the BG advantage en route to win number seven on the campaign.

Shortstop Kyle Jackson (Video), a Kent State commit, is hitting .500 with an on-base percentage of .593 while senior Bryce Hoehner is averaging .435 and Roberts .429.

An 18-10 team a year ago that finished two games behind Anthony Wayne in the Northern Lakes League at 10-4, BG has gotten off to an impressive start this year in spite of an injury to catcher Andrew Robinette. After hitting three doubles in the first three games of the season, Robinette has been sidelined with a broken thumb. Hopes are his return to action will come in May.

“Right now we just need to stay within ourselves, play our game and not get too caught up in the hype,” Beaverson said. “We need to go out and be number one on that day … stay grounded and focused on what we do and never take any team for granted.”

A rough stretch of games is ahead against Napoleon, Genoa, Springfield, Archbold and Northview in a stretch of six days.
