Team Preview: Heritage High School

By: Zac Bottoms
Arkansas Scouting Director

The 2017 season is rapidly approaching. As we get closer to season, I begin my preview of each team and stories that will affect the overall results of the high school season, and who will ultimately end their season in Baum Stadium on the campus of the University of Arkansas. We move through the 7A West, we turn our focus the Heritage High School.

In 2016 new head coach Mitch Cameron inherited a young team, that looked to replace two front line arms in 2015 LHP Kacey Murphy and 2015 LHP Ty Harris, both committed to Arkansas out of high school. They replaced several other seniors and what ended up being a total reconstruction of the roster. The young group competed well in league play but missed the state tournament. 2017 should have Heritage moving in the right direction. As they will be led by 2017 INF/RHP Logan Easley (Wichita State commit)

Pitching

On the mound look for 2017 RHP Logan Easley and 2018 RHP Dylan Qualls to lead the way. Both will be very competitive night in night out, Easley has shown dominant stuff in spurts, if he is consistent they will have a legit front-line starter followed by a solid No.2 with Qualls. Depth will be an issue as they will need some guys develop into consistent options.

Offensively

Offensively they will also lean on Easley and Qualls, unlike the pitching staff there are some clear cut threats surrounding them in 2017 Ethan Gates and 2017 Kaleb Gavin. A young player that may pop onto the scene this spring is 2019 OF Alex Nowak who is an advanced athlete that has shown signs of being ready to contribute.

Overall

Overall Heritage has some holes in the pitching rotation and in their offense unit, but they have enough high end talent to secure one of the 6 state tournament bids. Once you get in, you never know what can happen, especially with two quality arms. At the end of the day Coach Cameron will have his group playing the game the right way, and maybe even winning a few games, that on paper may not make sense.
