The Meadows: Quick Hits

The Meadows Scout Day in the books, we now take a look back at the standouts from yesterday's event. The Scout Day included a Pro-Style Workout where players ran a Laser Timed 60 Yard Dash, took a Batting Practice, Catcher Pop Times/Velocity, Outfield Evaluations/Velocity and Infield Evaluation/Velocity concluding with Pitches Bullpens. This was an exclusive event for players in the Meadows program to highlight current players as well as a spotlight on the current state of the program itself.

LJ Mercurius / 2023 / RHP/IF

Mercurius is currently one of the most sought after sophomores in Nevada with a live right arm to go with his obvious athleticism. He threw in his season opener the Friday before the event so he was not able to throw at the Scout Day, but he is set to represent Nevada at the Future Games this Summer for a second time. He did, however, showcase as a position player where he posted the event's Top Laser Timed 60 at 6.93. His athleticism was present through the batting practice session where he showed his ability to drive the ball to the big part of the yard with some power expected to come as he continues to fill out his lean, 6-foot-3 frame. Defensively, he showcased his ability to range laterally with some fluidity through the ball and a quick, loose arm on his throws to first where he registered the events Top Infield Velocity at 81 mph. Expect Mercurius to have a huge Spring for the Mustangs and carry that into an exciting Summer that will culminate at the 2021 Future Games.

 Derek Bain / 2024 / C/IF

Coming in at #5 in the recently released 2024 rankings, Bain continued to show why he is among the top players in the freshman class. His balanced set up at the plate with a hanging leg kick that he works to get down on time, allowing him to stay on the ball and spray balls all over the yard with some flashes of power potential to the pull side. Defensively, he uses his present strength to receive with ease behind the plate with his foot speed on the way to help decrease his 2.09 Pop Time. He also showed some athleticism in the infield where he will most likely remain at 3B with comfort moving to both sides and feel for the backhand play. This is a player who always puts in the work to continue progressing his game and he will be a guy you should keep on your radar over the coming years.

Gage Rinetti / 2024 / UT/RHP

Rinetti may have posted the best overall day, finding himself at, or near, the top of almost every statistical category that applied to him. Even though he currently stands at 5-foot-6, 140 pounds, the actions are there for when the physical development comes. Offensively, he produced a line drive filled round with a repeatable stroke that stayed mostly in the middle of the yard while flashes his ability to turn a ball on the inside part of the plate. Defensively, he posted the Top Pop Time of the day at 2.03, then showed his capable action in the outfield and in the infield as well where his glove stood out with an easy midsection transfer to his on-line throws to first. This is a guy to keep on your radar as well project his game will parallel his physical development over the coming years.
