Mason McRae
PBR Virginia/DC

The expanded usage of data, and the importance of it in regards to player development and player assessment is a legitimate, undeniable tool used by high school, college, and professional teams across the country. Today we break down some of the data from our recent Richmond Braves Scout Day event in Richmond, VA. See which players stood out in regards to Trackman data.

Cameron Carson

Class of 2023 / OF

Player Information

  • Graduating Class: 2023
  • Primary Position: OF
    Secondary Position: RHP
  • High School: Halifax County
    State: VA
  • Summer Team: Richmond Braves 17U National
  • Height: 5-11
    Weight: 165lbs
  • Bat/Throw: L/R

Cameron Carson’s changeup: Does a good job of killing lift on the pitch to reduce spin efficiency and create some gyro spin while also pushing his axis past 1:30. This increases the changes of a seam-shifted wake (when the tilt/direction of the pitch changes in the last 15 feet). Threw his CH in the zone 50% of the time while averaging just 9” of IVB (very good) and 12” of HB. He also managed to throw it with significantly less spin than his FB, while producing gyro (which should in theory inflate his raw spin rates) and throwing just 3.9 mh. Creating a larger velocity drop-off would pay dividends, but the shapes of the pitch are drastically different and should play-off each other.

Parker Codington

Class of 2025 / C

Player Information

  • Graduating Class: 2025
  • Primary Position: C
    Secondary Position: OF
  • High School: Norfolk Academy
    State: VA
  • Summer Team: Tidewater Phillies Stubbe
  • Height: 6-1
    Weight: 190lbs
  • Bat/Throw: R/R

Parker Codington’s curveball: Threw all of his CB’s in the zone, and averaged 2,615 rpm on a pitch with heavy drop and sweep. It’s a high efficiency 11/5 shape with a ton of movement at a decent velocity (68.4 mph on average, 68.9 mph max). He throws the pitch at/around 7:30, so it does play with an equal amount of top/side spin and can take on a slurve shape at times. He had the fourth-most HB on his CB, and the second-most drop.

Aden Judge

Class of 2024 / OF

Player Information

  • Graduating Class: 2024
  • Primary Position: OF
    Secondary Position: RHP
  • High School: Nansemond River
    State: VA
  • Summer Team: Richmond Braves 17U Platinum
  • Height: 5-10
    Weight: 175lbs
  • Bat/Throw: R/R

Aden Judge’s slider: Threw the hardest breaking ball of the event at 73.7 mph and did so while limiting movement on the pitch to drop spin efficiency. Had somewhat of an inconsistent direction, but when he was able to keep his axis below 10:30; he created heavy lateral drop due to heavy gyro spin with some late glove side cut. He has below average spin on the pitch, but does a good job optimizing it with the movement/velo profile.

Noah Grossmann

Class of 2024 / RHP

Player Information

  • Graduating Class: 2024
  • Primary Position: RHP
    Secondary Position: SS
  • High School: George C. Marshall
    State: VA
  • Summer Team: Richmond Braves
  • Height: 5-9
    Weight: 160lbs
  • Bat/Throw: R/R

Noah Grossman’s slider: Throws it with a ton of sweep at 64.5 mph. Averaged the most HB of any slider, and had more than double the next closest. It’s an extremely effective sweeping slider that has minimal lift and uses most of its active spin on the sweep. He was able to throw it in the zone 50% of the time. His SL was thrown at 9:15 where he was able to drop the IVB down to 2” and keep the HB at 21.2”.
