Underclass Games Invitees: 2018

By: Zac Bottoms
Arkansas Scouting Director

Over the week end we issued our first invites to the Underclass Games, which are June 14th and 15th at University of Central Arkansas. These players earned these invitations by performing well at the Elite Underclass Games that was hosted at Extra Innings Little Rock on January 17th. Here is the player’s evaluation from that event.

2018 RHP Mason Shaw Fayetteville HS
Shaw is a 5-foot-10 160-pound right-hander with an athletic frame and build. He pitches from an H ¾ arm slot with a short quick arm action. He uses a drop and drive balance point and drives to the plate with an athletic finish. His fastball worked 80-83 mph with late arm side run. He mixed in two secondary pitches a curveball and changeup. The curveball had 11/5 shape with gradual break thrown at 67-69 mph. He threw his changeup with fastball arm speed and late arm side run thrown at 71-73 mph. Overall Shaw projects to throw harder due to his pure arm speed. He has an advanced feel for his secondary pitches for his age.

2018 RHP Ryan Daggs Greenwood HS
Daggs is a 5-foot-9 212-pound right-handed pitcher with a large frame and a thick build. He competed in the strike zone with a fastball 78-80 mph, flashing up to 83 mph. He complimented the fastball with a curveball thrown at 69-70 mph, with late sharp break. He also throws a knuckleball at 63-64 mph with late movement. He pitches from an H ¾ arm slot with a quick arm with some stiffness. Mechanically he does a sound job repeating his mechanics. He uses a drop and drive balance point. He would benefit from staying in his legs instead of leaking out of the hips. He maintains balance and rhythm on a consistent basis. Overall Daggs has a quick arm that can locate his fastball on a consistent basis.

2018 LHP Evan Hiatt Catholic HS
Hiatt is a 6-foot-1 180-pound left-hander with a large frame and an average build. He pitches from an H ¾ arm slot with a quick clean arm. He repeats his mechanics with consistent rhythm and little effort. He locates his fastball on both sides of the plate at 82-84 mph with late run. His curveball is thrown 70-72 mph with 1/7 shape and late sharp break. He throws his changeup with fastball arm speed at 71-73 mph with arm side run and sink. Overall Hiatt is a polished left-hander with advanced pitch ability. As he matures physically he will throw hard.

2018 OF Bryson George Russellville HS
George is a 6-foot 160-pound outfielder with a large frame and an athletic build. George is a premium athlete that runs a 3.90 home to first. Defensively he plays through the baseball with a fluid exchange. He throws the baseball from an H ¾ arm slot with a short, stiff, accurate arm. He throws the ball 74 mph from the outfield. Offensively he starts from an athletic stance, he uses a slight load and a small stride. He attacks the baseball with a line drive swing, which consistently produces lines drives. Overall George is a premium athlete with a feel to hit. As he adds strength his overall game will improve.

2018 RHP/MIF Miller Pleimann Fayetteville HS
Pleiman is a 6-foot-1 155-pound right-hander with an athletic frame and a lanky build. He located his fastball 78-81 mph with arm-side run. He also throws a change up and curveball as his secondary pitches. The curveball was thrown 67-69 mph with 11/5 shape and gradual break. He located the changeup on a consistent basis with late sink. He pitches from a H ¾ arm slot with a quick clean arm. He repeats his delivery and rhythm consistently. Overall Plieman is a projectable player due to  his quick clean arm and frame.
