Underclass Invitational: Third Base Analysis

On Sunday, February 15, Prep Baseball Report Virginia/DC hosted its first event of 2015, the Underclass Invitational for members of the 2017 and 2018 graduating classes. Over 70 players showcased their skills for PBR staff at Virginia Sports Complex in Ruther Glen, Virginia. All of these players will be eligible to receive invites to the Top Prospect Games (2017 Grads) at English Field on the campus of Virginia Tech and the Top Prospect Games (2018 Grads) at Liberty University this summer.  Players from this event will also be eligible to be selected to represent Team Virginia/D.C. in the Future Games Powered by Under Armour that will take place in Westfield, IN on July 29 – August 1.

Third Base analysis:

+Chase DeGrood, 3B, Patriot, 2017
Hit from a tall/balanced stance.  Slight arm bar as hands went back and down during load.  Stride had some length and was on line.  Good balance.  Good approach on the day but rhythm was somewhat stiff.  Bat path had some length and was uphill.  Had extension.  Gap-to-Gap stroke.  Had an Exit Velocity of 80 mph.  In the field, threw form a high ¾ arm slot with a short loose arm action.  Throws were accurate and had carry.  Played through the ball at times.  Did allow the ball to get deep in stance.  Footwork was fluid.  Exchanges were clean but slow at times.  Hands were soft.  Had some actions.  Had a Positional Velocity of 76 mph.

+Gary Fuller, 3B, Stone Bridge, 2017
Hit from a balanced stance with flexed knees.  Hands went back with a slight arm bar.  Minimal stride.  Good balance throughout the swing.  Very good approach during the round with a quiet rhythm.  Short, level bat path with extension.  Line drive/gap-to-gap stroke with the potential for power.  Had advanced feel for the barrel.  Had an Exit Velocity of 79 mph.  In the field, threw from a high ¾ arm slot, with a long arm action.  Throws were accurate and had some carry.  Allowed the ball to play him at times.  Showed average hands but the exchanges were clean and fluid.  Had a Positional Velocity of 83 mph.  

+Hunter Johnson, 3B, Liberty Christian Academy, 2017
Hit from an athletic/balanced stance.  Smooth load back.  Short stride with a leg kick.  Outstanding balance.  Took an advanced approach during the round with a very fluid rhythm.  Was short to the ball with good extension.  Gap-to-Gap swing with above average power.  Hands were strong and quick.  Had an explosive lower half.  Had an Exit Velocity of 83 mph.  In the field, threw from a over the top/high ¾ arm slot with a long, quick arm action.  Throws were accurate and had carry.  Was athletic and played through the ball.  Footwork was quick and fluid.  Hands were soft with quick/clean exchanges.  Had a Positional Velocity of 79 mph.

+Ty Kwiatkoski, 3B, Calvert, 2018
Hit from a tall/balanced stance that was slightly open. Minimal load back with an arm bar.  Took a short stride with a leg kick and maintained balance throughout the swing.  Stayed on line.  Had a good approach at the plate with somewhat stiff rhythm.  Bat path was level with some length.  Line drive stroke that was uphill at times.  had an Exit Velocity of 76 mph.  In the field, threw from a over the top/high ¾ arm slot, with a long arm action.  Throws were accurate with average carry.  Waited on the ball at times.  Had clean exchanges with average hands.  Had a Positional Velocity of 69 mph.

+Colton Lee, 3B, Potomac, 2017
Hit from a balanced/athletic stance that was slightly open and tall.  Minimal load back.  Short stride that stayed on line.  Good balance.  Took a good approach during the round. Rhythm was a bit stiff and early at times.  Short, level bat path with extension.  Line drive/gap-to-gap stroke.  Used the hands well.  Had an Exit Velocity of 82 mph.  In the field, threw from a over the top/high ¾ arm slot with a long arm action.  Throws were somewhat accurate with average carry.  Waited on the ball at times which made the footwork slow.  Exchanges were quick and clean with average hands.  Had a Positional Velocity of 76 mph.

+Antonio Menendez, 3B, Herndon, 2017
Hit from a tall/balanced stance that was slightly open.  Hands went back during the load causing an arm bar.  Took a short stride with a leg kick.  Good balance.  Had a good approach during the round with quiet rhythm that was early.  Bat path was level with extension and some length.  Had a line drive/gap-to-gap stroke.  Good hands! Had an Exit Velocity of 86 mph.  In the field, threw from a high ¾ arm slot with a long loose arm action.  Throws were accurate for the most part and had carry.  Played through the baseball.  Showed fluid footwork and soft hands.  Good actions with quick and clean exchanges.  Had a Positional Velocity of 78 mph.
