Underclass Trials: Preview

Blake Davis
State Director

Taking a look into next weekends Underclass Trials.  Today we highlight a few of the players who will be attending the Underclass Trials at the LakePoint Complex on Saturday, November 9th.  This event will be big for these young prospects as they show off their talents for the PBR Scouting Staff in hopes of earning a roster spot in one of the feature PBR Georgia showcase events (Future Games, Top Prospect Games, Underclass Games and Peach State Games) next summer.

Grey Brannen, OF, Westfield (GA), 2022

6-foot-4 185 lbs. Lanky, athletic frame that has a smooth, short swing. Has a great backside approach, and can drive the outside pitch the other way with power. Showed off the speed on a 2B to right center. Good runner on the bases and in the OF. Fields the ball well, and puts power behind his throws. Look for Brannen to keep developmenting, and add strength to make him even more of a threat at the plate.

Davis Green, 2022, Pierce County, CF

5-9,155. While small in stature Green has paced the 5Star lineup and helped the runs pile up for the Mafia accounting for half of their runs produced. He showed off his athleticism with a line drive single first AB where he churned a 4.6 home to rounding the bag on the turn; he followed that at bat up with a deep sac fly. Green has used the entire field in this game thus far and keeps the bat through the zone long with slight loft in the swing.

Eric Snow, MIF, Mary Persons HS (GA), 2022

Snow is a very interesting young 2022 infield prospect.  At 5-foot-10, 150-pounds he gets good bat-speed from his frame. He sets up straight away with a deep load, he almost gets to an arm bar, but does a good job of not being locked out, leaving himself a direct path to the baseball.  Snow centered balls for hard contact all day and was impressive both in batting practice and in live situations.  Very interesting bat on this youngster.  Defensively Snow shows projectable arm stroke and actions, his feet were always underneath him and played with solid range and control.  Lots of upside to this middle of the field prospect and will be a very close follow over the coming years.

Andon Lewis, 1B/OF, Calhoun (GA), 2022

6-foot-2 195-pounds. Tall, athletic frame righty has had a great showing this fall. He has a smooth, simple stride at the plate that makes consistent contact. He transfers his weight well and it allows him to hit balls with power. Hits the inside pitch really well, and showed discipline to hit the ball the other way. Can play 1B or OF, gets the job done at both positions. A player to keep an eye on this high school season.

Jonathan Vigoa, SS/RHP, Rome (GA), 2022

5-foot-11 160-pounds. Strong 2-way player that is on the radar as an up and coming prospect for the 2022’s in the state of Georgia. He has impressed the past weekends of the fall, and continues to show well halfway through the fall season. Strong, athletic frame that can get it done on the mound and at the plate. On the mound he was up to 86. Stayed with the FB mostly because he did not need the off speed. Sat 82-84, with good life on the FB that got on hitters quickly. A lot of movements in the motion caused some control issues, but still managed to compete in the zone with good body awareness. At the plate he has a simple stroke, with a strong lower half. Can run really well when he gets on the bases. Can play SS or C, good hands at SS with a strong arm and quick feet. Vigoa is a Georgia kid to keep an eye on.

Peyton Gentry, OF/C, East Paulding (GA), 2022

6-foot, 150-pound right-handed hitting outfielder and catcher, athletic frame, projectable build. Offensively, starts with weight loaded on his back-side, hands separate, leg kick timing trigger, good balance. Loose, easy swing with present bat speed, works level through the zone, takes a gap-to-gap approach.

Devin Chandler, SS, Stockbridge (GA), 2022

5-foot-9 165-pounds. Continues to show off his athleticism at the plate and on defense. The short, compact frame has some pop. Hit a HR earlier in the fall, stays consistent and shows that he can punish baseballs. Good runner, and really athletic at SS. Has a strong arm, and get to balls in the hole and throw on the run. Can flip it from different arm angles as well.

Murchael Turner, OF, Woodward Academy (GA), 2023

5-foot-8, 140-pound right-handed hitting outfielder, athletically built with quick-twitch muscle. Offensively, has shortened things up since we last saw him, open setup, hands load to near arm bar, short reverse toe-tap stride, good balance. Line drive hitter who flashes gap-to-gap potential, hands are quick and smooth to and through contact, consistently found the barrel at the PBR Cup. An offensive catalyst for the GBSA Rays lineup out of the leadoff spot.

Elijah Reece, RHP, North Hall (GA), 2022

6-foot-1, 175-pound right-handed pitcher, long, lanky frame. Arm works long and clean to a ¾ slot. Had one of the top pitching performances of the PBR Cup, coming in the underclass finals against Canes Southeast. Took a no-hitter all the way into the sixth inning, coming one out away before allowing his first hit. Fastball sat 74-77, mixed in a slider at 65-67, feel for both.

Justen Newsome, OF, Harrison (GA), 2022

6-foot-2, 160-pound right-handed hitting outfielder, projectable frame, long, lanky with emerging strength throughout, moves athletically with long strides. Has really made strides from the summer into the fall, now a consistent top of the order bat for the Georgia Scorpions. Takes a more gap-to-gap approach with pull-side pop, can turn on pitches with ease, uses his length to his advantage. With continued reps and added strength, will be able to consistently drive the ball with force.

Manning West, RHP, Apalachee (GA), 2022

A big-bodied 6-foot-6, 210 pounds; strong throughout and has advanced feel for already large frame. One of the top underclassmen of the event, West showed his dominant arsenal with a primary two-pitch-mix. Has a calm delivery up to balance-point, works downhill after separation; lands on-line. Throws from a H3/4 slot and arm speed is aggressive and quick. Fastball showed heavy, late life at 86-89. Advanced command for fastball; spotted up, armside, on running 2-seam. Showed ability to throw on the inner-half of the plate to RHH and run fastball away from lefties. Worked around baserunners and competed well in high-leverage situations. Showed feel for breaking ball with 11/5 shape at 70-72. Sure to be a highly sought-after arm in the 2022 class.

AJ Demastrie, C, River Ridge (GA), 2023

5-foot-9, 170-pound switch-hitting catcher, stocky build with strength, still has a ways to go before he has reached physical maturity. Offensively, has feel in the box, slightly open setup, hands start low and smoothly load back and up, short stride to square, good balance throughout. Has easy effort in his swing, barrel works mostly level with extension through the zone, strong wrists/forearms allow for him to drive the ball to all fields. Showed a good approach at the plate with situational awareness, rarely plays outside of himself, consistently finds barrels. Presently a mostly line drive hitter, with continued physical development will add more power to his swing.
