In 2023, our staff would like to take a look at a Virginia/DC high school team that had a big week and earned the honor of Team Of The Week.

This week the award goes to the Commonwealth Classic Champions, the Mills Godwin Eagles. Godwin went 3-0 in the Inaugural Commonwealth Classic Spring Break Tournament, which featured eight of the best teams in the state. The Eagles took out Greenbrier Christian on Saturday night, topped then #1 Freedom (South Riding) in the semis, and the defending 4A State Champion Hanover Hawks in the Championship.

It was the senior leadership and production of players like tournament MVP Garrett Mason (Virginia Tech), Juice Tobin (Longwood), Cole Powers (Mary Washington), and Caelan Funk that allowed the Eagles to come out on top. Three Eagles were selected to the All Tournament teams, first team recipients were Garrett Mason and Juice Tobin, while junior Eric Capps gained second team recognition for his clutch offensive performances. Luke Smyers (Alabama) had a big homerun on Saturday and battled during his start in the semifinal game and Jackson York had a few big hits for the now #3 Mills Godwin Eagles.
