VA/DC Top Prospect Games: Hitter Analysis

On Tuesday, June 19, PBR VA/DC hosted its summer Top Prospect Games at Liberty University in Lynchburg. Around 30 players took the field, primarily from the Class of 2019, to showcase their talent in front of PBR staff and the college coaches that were on hand. Today we look at the hitters from the event, check back tomorrow for our pitcher analysis.

Zalen Akers 1B Christiansburg 2019
Akers is 6-7 with a lanky frame that has plenty of projection left to it. Hits from the right side from an athletic open stance. Good rhythm, strides on line and loads back. Hips rotate fully with some explosion, slightly uphill swing path with some whip in his bat, generates batspeed with an easy swing. Showed good approach, working gap to gap, ball carries off his bat, exit velocity was 88. At first, gets body behind the ball and fields with average hands. Throws from a higher three-quarters arm slot, infield velocity was 75.

John Barrie C Paul VI Catholic 2019 (Marymount)
Barrie is 6-0 and hits from the right side from an open athletic stance. Low leg kick stride on line, loads back with a wrap, has rhythm to his swing. Hips fired and maintains good lower half balance throughout swing. Slightly uphill swing path with extension through the ball. Kept hands inside ball, showed good approach working gap to gap, exit velocity was 82. Behind the plate, clean release, gains ground towards target, throws from high three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action. Pop times were 2.05-2.13 and catcher velocity was 73.

Thomas Bilello 1B Tallwood 2019
Bilello is 5-9 with an athletic frame, hits from the right side from a balanced athletic stance. Leg kick stride on line, loads down and back, some rhythm to swing. Hips rotate completely, maintains balance during swing. Shorter path to ball, works uphill through contact, showed a pull approach, exit velocity was 81. At first, gets body behind the ball and fields with average hands and a wide base. Throws from a three-quarters arm slot, infield velocity was 67.

Luke Burner OF/LHP Highland School 2019
Burner is 5-10 with an athletic frame and a strong lower half. Hits from the left side from an athletic stance. Short leg kick stride on line, smooth load back, has rhythm to his swing. Some explosion in his hips, very good balance throughout swing. Short swing path, gets barrel to contact quickly and makes consistent hard contact. Line drive hitter uses whole field, high finish generates some carry, exit velocity was 82. In the outfield, gets body behind ball, works through ball to exchange. Throws from three-quarters arm slot, outfield velocity was 78. Ran 4.40 home to first.

Jimmy Clark OF Paul VI Catholic 2019
Clark is 6-0 and has an athletic frame with some projection left to it. Hits from the right side from a wide balanced athletic stance. Short stride on line, short load back, explosive lower half, maintains some balance as body shifts forward during swing. Short to ball, stays inside, uphill swing path with extension through the ball, worked the middle of the field and swing sets up well to drive ball to right-center, exit velocity was 77. In the outfield, aggressively charges ball, works through it with a clean exchange. Throws from a higher three-quarters arm slot and showed some accuracy with his throws, outfield velocity was 81. Ran a 4.39 home to first.

Noah Knapp RHP/1B First Colonial 2019
Knapp is 6-1 with an athletic frame. He hits from the right side from a balanced athletic stance. Short leg kick stride, smooth load back, good rhythm to his set-up. Hips rotate fully and he maintains balance during his swing. Short to ball with some quickness to his bat, slightly uphill path with some extension through the ball. Worked gap to gap, exit velocity was 85. At first base, gets body behind the ball and fields with a wider base and average hands. Infield velocity was 75.

Daniel Leo RHP/1B Westfield 2019
Leo is 6-1 with an athletic frame and a stronger lower half. Hits from an upright balanced stance, short stride on line, short load down and back. Hips rotate with some violence and maintains some balance. Shorter to ball, uphill path, worked gap to gap with some strength at contact, exit velocity was 80. At first, gets body behind the ball and fields with above average hands, infield velocity was 72.

Jack McDonald C Louisa County 2019
McDonald is 6-3 with an athletic frame that has some projection left to it. Hits from the right side from a slightly open balanced stance. Short stride on line, smooth load back, showed some rhythm to his swing. Explosive lower half with some balance to his swing. Keep hands inside, uphill swing path with some strength at contact, worked gap to gap, exit velocity was 89. Behind the plate, clean exchange, throws from a low three-quarters arm slot, position velocity was 73 and pop times were 2.09-2.18. Ran a 4.41 home to first.

Danny Moshier Albany Academy (NY) 2019
Moshier is 5-11 with a lankier athletic frame that has some projection left to it, hits from the left side from an upright athletic stance. Short leg kick stride on line and smooth load back, good rhythm to swing. Quick bat, level swing path with extension uphill through contact, some strength. Consistent barrel ability, line drive swing with doubles power, showed a pull preference, exit velocity was 88. Behind the plate, quick clean exchange, throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action. Showed accuracy on his throws, pop times were 1.99-2.04 and catcher velocity was 81. Showed some speed with a 4.42 home to first.

Caleb Pritchard C Cave Spring 2019
Pritchard is 6-0 with an athletic frame. He hits from the right side from a wide, slightly open athletic stance. Very short leg kick stride on line, no load, has some rhythm. Lower half rotates completely with some explosion and he maintains some balance during his swing. Short swing path that is level to contact with extension up through the ball, strong at contact, showed good approach working gap to gap, exit velocity was 84. Behind the plate, clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a very short arm action. Position velocity was 76 and pop times were 2.08-2.21, showed some accuracy keeping his throws on line. Ran a 4.40 home to first.

Noah Robbins C Liberty Christian 2019
Robbins is 5-11 with an athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a balanced upright stance, leg kick stride on line, short load back with some rhythm. Explosive lower half with good balance to his swing. Short and quick to the ball with extension through it, slightly uphill path, strong through contact with knack for barrel, showed a pull fly ball approach with some power potential, exit velocity was 91. Behind the plate, clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action. Catcher velocity was 71 with pop times running 2.09-2.22. Has athleticism and versatility, showed ability to play infield and outfield as well. Ran a 4.28 home to first.

Mark Smith 3B/RHP Tallwood 2019
Smith is 6-1 with a strong athletic frame, he hits from the right side from a balanced athletic stance. Leg kick stride on line, loads back with a slight wrap, hips rotate with some explosiveness, some balance to his swing. Longer uphill swing path, pull fly ball approach, very strong at contact, strength generates power, exit velocity was 98. At third, clean footwork, rounds ball and fields with wide base and above average hands. Plays through the ball to a quick clean exchange, low three quarters arm slot with a free action, infield velocity was 83.

Quade Tomlin SS Liberty Christian 2020
Tomlin is 6-0 with an athletic frame that still has projection left to it. He hits from the left side from a balanced athletic stance. Quiet set-up, short stride on line, smooth load back. Explosive lower half with very good balance during swing. Short quick bat path, pretty swing. Level line drive swing with a whippy bat, showed a pull tendency. Potential to generate power to all fields, exit velocity was 91. At short, clean feet, fields ball with soft hands and a wider base. Quick clean exchange, plays through the ball, throws from a lower three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action, infield velocity was 80.

South Trimble 3B Frank Cox 2019
Trimble is 5-11 with an athletic frame that has projection left to it. He hits from the right side from an open balanced athletic stance. Low leg kick stride on line, smooth load down and back, some rhythm to his swing. Hips rotate with some explosion, good balance to his swing as well. Stays inside ball, worked gap to gap, level line drive swing with extension uphill through contact, projects to have extra base power to all fields, exit velocity was 90. On the infield, rounds ball and fields with a good wide base and soft hands. Quick, clean exchange, works through the ball, throws from a low three-quarters arm slot with a short free arm action, infield velocity was 80. Ran a 4.23 home to first.

Aidan Willard OF/RHP Briar Woods 2019
Willard is 5-11 with an athletic frame that still has projection left to it. He hits from the left side from a balanced athletic stance. Big leg kick stride on line, short load back with a slight wrap. Hips rotate with some explosion and he keeps some balance during his swing. Short to the ball with a slightly uphill swing path, line drive hitter who can generate some carry to all fields, exit velocity was 90. In the outfield, charges ball aggressively and plays through it to a quick clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action, outfield velocity was 83, showed some accuracy on his throws. Ran a 4.29 home to first.

Jacob Williams 3B Liberty Christian 2019
Williams is 6-3 with an athletic frame that is strong and still has some projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a balanced athletic stance, short leg kick stride on line, smooth load back with a bit of a wrap. Hips rotate violently and maintains good lower half balance during swing. Short and slightly uphill to contact with extension through the ball, very strong at contact with a pull power approach, exit velocity was 90, definite home run power to his pull side with potential to have it to all fields in the future. At third, rounds ball and has clean feet, fields with a good wide base and soft hands. Plays through to a clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, infield velocity was 80. Showed versatility by taking balls in the outfield as well. Ran a 4.34 home to first.

Jake Wortman C Colonial Forge 2019
Wortman is 6-2 with a lanky frame that still has a lot of projection to it. He is a switch hitter, from the left side balanced athletic stance, short level swing with extension uphill through the ball, line drive pull approach with doubles power. From the right side, open athletic stance with more of a leg kick stride, short level line drive swing showed good approach working gap to gap. Best exit velocity was 89. Behind the plate, clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action, pop times were 2.02-2.19 and catcher velocity was 72. Also showcased at third base and arm their was 79.

Gavin Younce C Greenbrier Christian 2019
Younce is 6-0 with an athletic frame. He hits from the right side from a balanced athletic stance, short stride on line, minimal load back, quiet set-up with good rhythm. Explosive lower half with good balance throughout swing. Short to ball, slightly uphill line drive swing with extension through the ball, worked gap to gap, exit velocity was 85. Behind the plate, quick clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action, ball has carry to it. Pop times were 1.91-2.14 and catcher velocity was 77. Ran a 4.31 home to first.
