VA/DC Top Prospect Games: Pitcher Analysis

On Tuesday, June 19, PBR VA/DC hosted its summer Top Prospect Games at Liberty University in Lynchburg. Around 30 players took the field, primarily from the Class of 2019, to showcase their talent in front of PBR staff and the college coaches that were on hand. Today we wrap up our analysis of the event with a look at the pitchers.

Luke Burner OF/LHP Highland School 2019
Burner is 5-10 with an athletic frame and a strong lower half, he throws from three-quarters arm slot, short free arm action and normal effort to delivery. Lands on line, shoulders are closed creates some deception in delivery. Fastball was 72-75, touching 76 with some plane and late sink to it. Curveball was 64-66 with gradual 1/7 break and some armspeed.

Ben Capehart RHP Maury 2019
Capehart is 6-2 with a lanky frame that has a lot of projection left to it. Throws from a higher three-quarters arm slot, long loose arm action with some quickness to it, throws with some effort. Clean simple delivery that he repeats effectively. Fastball was 83-86, touching 88, pitch gets good downward angle and some late life to it. Curveball was 73-75 with good armspeed and late 11/5 action, almost like a hard cutter with good depth.

Mason Delane RHP Colonial Beach 2019
Delane is 6-4 with a lankier frame and plenty of projection left to it. Throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action that is fast and loose, throws with some effort. Closed off shoulders and slightly closed landing create some deception in his delivery, hiding ball. Fastball was 86-88 with good downward angle and a bit of late boring action to armside. Curveball was 79-80 with good armspeed and late hard 11/5 break. Change-up was 82-83 with good armspeed and a bit of late sink to it.

Zack Kennedy RHP LC Bird 2019
Kennedy is 6-2 with an athletic frame that has some projection left to it. Extreme drop and drive delivery, throws from a low three-quarters arm slot with a very short free arm action that is quick, throws with some effort. Hides ball some during delivery. Fastball was 82-84, touching 85, pitch had some downward plane and late sink to it. Curveball was 72-74 with some armspeed and sharp 10/4 break. Change-up was 74-75 with some armspeed and fade to it.

Noah Knapp RHP/1B First Colonial 2019
Knapp is 6-1 with an athletic frame, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action and some effort. Strides out on line, lands slightly open. Fastball was 76-78, touching 79, with big downward angle to it. Curveball was 69-72 with good armspeed and sharp 12/6 break. Change-up was 70-71 with some armspeed and fading action to it.

Gape Lassiter RHP Patrick Henry (Ashland) 2019
Lassiter is 5-10 with an athletic frame that has some projection left to it. He throws from a lower three-quarters arm slot with a short, loose arm action that has some quickness to it. Fastball was 81-83, touching 84, with late run to it. Curveball was 68-70 with sharp 10/4 break and good armspeed. Change-up was only thrown in warmups, had some armspeed and fading action to it. Pitched to contact and was around the zone the entire outing.

Daniel Leo RHP/1B Westfield 2019
Leo is 6-1 with an athletic frame and a stronger lower half, drop and drive delivery and throws from a sidearm slot. Long free arm action and normal effort. Lands closed and creates a tough angle for righthanded hitters. Fastball was 78-80, touching 83, with late sink and run to the ball. Curveball was 68-69 with sharp 10/4 break that got some depth and some armspeed. Change-up was 75-76 with good armspeed and late fading action to it.

Alexander Markus RHP Benedictine 2019
Markus is 6-0 with a lankier athletic frame that has projection left to it. He throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, short free arm action and normal effort. Shoulders are level and slightly closed, stays on line throughout delivery. Fastball was 81-84, touching 85, with downward plane and late run to it. Curveball was 74-77 with good armspeed and hard 11/5 break, has a chance to be a swing and miss pitch. Showed a slider in warm-ups that had later 11/5 break as well.

Elijah Parks LHP Manchester 2019
Parks is 6-0 with an athletic frame that has some projection left to it. He throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action that is free and has some quickness, throws with some effort. Closed off shoulders hide ball and creates some deception in his delivery. Fastball was 83-85, touching 86, with hard late run to it. Curveball was 68-70 with sharp 1/7 break that gets good depth and has some armspeed to it. His change-up was thrown in warmups with some armspeed and late run to it.

William Pickford RHP Bishop O’Connell 2019
Pickford is 6-5 with an athletic frame that still has projection to it. He throws from a low three-quarters arm slot with a very short, loose arm action that is very quick, generates velocity with some effort. Simple delivery that is repeatable, lands slightly open with a square finish. Fastball was 85-87, touching 88, with some downward plane and late run to it. Curveball was 71-72 with sharp 10/4 break and good armspeed, swing and miss pitch that gets good depth.

Logan Ransom LHP Steward School 2019
Ransom is 5-10 with an athletic frame, throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a short loose arm action that is quick, normal effort to his delivery. Simple delivery that he repeats consistently. Fastball was 82-83, touching 84, with late run to it. Slider was 75-77 with good armspeed and late hard 2/8 break, pitch got some depth. Change-up was 77-78 with good armspeed and late fade to it. Strike thrower showed feel for all three pitches.

Mark Smith 3B/RHP Tallwood 2019
Smith is 6-1 with a strong athletic frame, throws from a low three-quarters arm slot with a short loose arm action that is quick, normal effort to delivery. Shoulders closed as he strides out, add that to big wingspan and he creates a tough angle and some deception. Fastball was 82-84, touching 86, with late run to it. Curveball was 67-69 with sharp 10/4 break and some armspeed to it.

Dylan Weber LHP Dominion 2019
Weber is 6-0 with an athletic frame and throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a short free arm action and easy effort. Closed off delivery that he repeats well, hides ball and creates deception. Fastball was 80-82, touching 83, with some sink to it, showed ability to command to both sides of the plate. Curveball was 66-68 with sharp 1/7 break and some armspeed, can change shape and speed of pitch. Change-up was 73-74 with some late run and good armspeed. Commands all three pitches in any count.

Aidan Willard OF/RHP Briar Woods 2019
Willard is 5-11 with an athletic frame that still has projection left to it, throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a short free arm action and normal effort. Simple delivery stays on line to target. Fastball was 77-79, touching 81, with late boring action to his armside. Change-up was 73-74 with good armspeed and fading action to it. Curveball was 70-71 with good armspeed and late 11/5 break to it.
