Webster Schroeder outlasts Corning Painted-Post

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Showers persisted throughout Saturday's showdown of state contenders at Basket Road Field. The raindrops didn't dampen Webster Schroeder's offense, at least not in the late innings.

Schroeder’s Phil Ferranti continued to swing a hot bat finishing the day 2-for-2 with two walks, three RBI and two runs scored. The senior catcher capped a four-run sixth with a two-out single, and the state finalist from a year ago improved to 7-0 on the season with a 6-1 victory over Corning-Painted Post

Ben Mulhall allowed one run on five hits over six innings and improved to 3-0 on the season. The senior left-hander struck out five and retired seven of the first eight he faced.

Shane Marshall highlighted a two-out rally as Schroeder got all the runs it needed in the fifth.

The SUNY Binghamton commit scampered home from second on a wild pitch to score the eventual game-winning run. Trailing 1-0, Mike Masucci worked a two-out base on balls and Marshall followed with a line drive into the alley in left center field.

When the ball bounded over a waist-high temporary outfield fence, Marshall returned to second with a ground-rule double.

“When I first got up there my batting gloves were soaking wet, and the bat was soaking wet,” Marshall said. “So I figured I just better hold on to the bat. He just left one in the middle, and I got the barrel on it. I almost threw the bat on the hit.”

Two batters later, Marshall crossed the plate with the winning run.

With league play to follow in the coming days and pitch counts to consider, the Hawks limited their arms. Alex Bardo started for Corning-Painted Post started but exited after two scoreless innings. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound right-hander worked out of a two-on, no-out jam in the second with a double play and weak pop up to the infield.

Ferranti, who hit .600 (6-10) a week ago with two doubles and eight RBI, showed his ability to make two-strike adjustments. After singling to left in in the fourth, the Monroe CC commit fouled of a pair of pitches before delivering in the sixth. Patient at the plate, Ferranti stays short to the ball and makes consistent, solid contact.

Peter Smith, a sophomore recently promoted from the JV, came out of the bullpen and worked a perfect seventh getting a pair of ground outs and a routine fly ball.
