Webster Schroeder vs Penfield: Game Recap

Webster Schroeder 4     Penfield 3

Another week. Another walk-off. That's the Section 5 way - at least when it comes to the Game of the Week. Shane Marshall capped a late-inning rally with a two-out walk-off single. Marshall's sinking line drive to center field scored Justin Graham from second as the Webster-Schroeder Warriors erased a two-run sixth inning deficit for a 4-3 victory over the Penfield Patriots.

All-Around Goods

With three RBI and a run scored, Marshall produced all of Webster Schroeder's runs. The junior CF/3B/RHP finished the day 3-for-4 with a double and a stolen base. But that's just part of the story. A late-inning defensive adjustment, Marshall moved from center to the hot corner. He took away a sure double down the line off the bat of Jake Hartnett with one out in the seventh. He ended the inning with a diving stop in the hole and throw across the diamond. In the second inning, Penfield's Ryan Kalbfus beat Marshall (no easy task considering Marshall has been clocked at sub-four seconds getting down the first baseline) with an RBI double to straight center. Marshall made good on the play as part of relay which got Kalbfus trying to stretch the hit to a triple. Marshall showed his speed in the first. With Penfield's corner outfielders pinching to take away gaps, Marshall lifted what would be for most a single down the left field. Getting a good jump out of the box and turn at first, he made it easily to second.

Turning Point

After managing just two hits from the second through the end of the fifth, the first four Warriors reached base in the sixth. Graham walked to start the parade. After Stephen Smith put runners on the corners with a base hit, Marshall singled, swiped a bag and scored on an error to knot the game at three.

Not To Be Overlooked

Penfield starter, Kyle Straube (pronounced straw-BE), held a Webster Schroeder lineup, with nary an easy out, to four hits through five innings. Working both sides of the plate with his breaking ball, the lanky junior kept the Warriors off-balance. He throws a deceiving mid to upper-70s fastball mixing it in with heavy doses of off-speed stuff. At the plate, Straube reached base four times with two hits and two walks.

Snapping The Skid

Webster Schroeder came into the contest shouldering a two-game losing streak. The Warriors first such slump in two years.

Getting By With A Little Help From His Friends

Connor Bisaillon picked up the win in relief. The soft-throwing left-hander hurled an inning and a third of shutout ball. Pitching to contact, he kept the ball in the infield where Marshall and Graham (who took away a hit in the hole between third and short) took over from there."I know my teammates are going to make plays behind me, and they made plays. They made great plays out there," said the junior.

Previous Game of the Week Results

The Penfield Patriots scored five in their final at bat to beat Greece Athena, 6-2 in nine innings on April 18th. One week later, Athena tallied twice in the bottom of the seventh only to lose 5-3 to Fairport in eight innings. Last week, Brent Turpyn plated Manhattan commit Dominic Palma with a one-out walk-off single as the Hilton Cadets rallied to beat the Brockport Blue Devils, 5-4.
