The first week of the public school season and the second week for the private schools is in the books. Weather in the south limited the number of games that some teams played, as well as the looming spring vacation for many schools.

The top seven in the rankings remains the same as they combined to go undefeated on the week, with No. 1 Liberty Christian, No. 2 James Madison, and No. 5 Hanover making big statements with very one-sided shutout victories.

No. 9 Paul VI Catholic moves into the Top Ten after a trio of victories over solid Lake Braddock, North Stafford, and Good Counsel squads. No. 19 Stone Bridge fell out of the Top Ten after losing Saturday to newly-ranked No. 24 Briar Woods. The Falcons capped off a 4-0 week with the win over the Bulldogs.

No. 14 Battlefield moves up after victories over No. 21 C.D. Hylton and Freedom (Woodbridge) as the Bobcat pitching staff opened the season with back-to-back no-hitters.

No. 18 Hickory lost a tight showdown on Friday night to No. 17 Grassfield, 1-0, as Grassfield senior right-hander Garrett Stallings (Tennessee) shut down a very good Hawk offense, scattering five hits over a complete game while striking out ten and walking none.

No. 20 Jefferson Forest started the season 3-0. No. 25 Covenant had a 3-1 week, and was a late St. Christopher’s rally away from winning all four games.
