MEQUON, WI – The first semifinal game in the 2013 Summer State Tournament saw West Bend West take on Sheboygan Falls.

West Ben West got on the board early and often against the Falcons. The Spartans scored three in the second and two in each of the third and fourth innings. The Spartans played small ball all day long, laying down bunt attempt after bunt attempt, keeping the pressure on the Sheboygan Falls defense.

The Spartans got the scoring started with a bases loaded, one out squeeze that the Falcon defense could not defend. Alec Miller then followed with a two RBI ground rule double to make the score 3-0.

After two consecutive two run innings West Bend West took an 8-1 lead into the sixth. Trailing by seven runs, Sheboygan Falls would not go quietly scoring five runs in the sixth to cut the lead to two. After six straight hitters would reach safely either by single or base on balls the Falcons found themselves knocking on the door of a comeback. The big blow was delivered by senior Jake Meyer whose sacrifice fly to right field ended up plating two runs.

Facing a two run deficit going into their last at bats, the Falcons would threaten again, forcing West Bend West to bring starting pitcher Jacob Kopp back into the game to try to close things out. Junior Josh Rostek plated a run with a double. With Rostek then standing just 90 feet away from sending the game in to extra innings, junior third baseman Kyle Krier made a sensational diving play to end the threat an send West Bend West to the state title game.

Jacob Kopp recorded the win going five innings allowing two earned runs and striking out three. Sheboygan Falls third baseman Eric Klemme went 3-for-4 with three runs scored.
