Wisconsin Uncommitted 2023s

By Isaiah Glidden
Area Scout, Staff Writer

With the fall concluding, and as we head into the offseason, we thought it was time to shed some light on some of the best uncommitted talent the ‘23 class in Wisconsin has to offer. While this list is dominated by a number of position players, there are a handful of arms towards the top. Below you will find 25 prospects that, to our knowledge, have not announced their commitment yet.

You’ll find the full updated class of 2023 rankings by clicking here.

pitchers

Cole Bensen RHP / Bay Port, WI / 2023

Rankings  WI Rank: 46

This spring, Bensen took over as one of the Pirates' ace as some injuries hampered Bay Port’s pitching staff, and after a breakout performance last winter, he jumped in without missing a beat, leading Bay Port to yet another playoff run. This is what our staff had to say regarding his performance this winter at the Green Bay Preseason ID:

We last saw Bensen in July at the Badger State Battle, where his fastball played at 82-84 mph and his secondaries were still fully developing. Now, it’s clear that the more physical 6-foot, 195-pound junior has added strength to all areas of his frame. Bensen’s day started when he ran a 6.86 in the 60-yard dash and followed it up by barreling his hardest-hit ball up at 96-plus mph in BP. He jumped on the mound later in his workout and pumped a lively fastball in at 85-87 mph with above-average spin rates (2,200-plus rpm average) and occasional arm-side life. The separator in this look for Bensen was the improvement of his breaking ball; thrown with more intent that resulted in tighter spin and later break off an 11/5 plane, creating a swing-and-miss profile recorded at 2,200-plus rpm with over 14 inches of horizontal movement on average. We’ve witnessed Bensen’s hyper competitiveness on the mound ourselves, and that mentality, coupled with his enhanced arsenal, clearly elevates the uncommitted right-hander’s ceiling.”

Deuce Musial II RHP / Notre Dame Academy, WI / 2023

Rankings  WI Rank: 60

Musial is listed at an upside 6-foot-6, 185-pound righty, with some major room to fill out. We haven’t had the chance to see Musial in a showcase setting in quite some time now but in the past we have seen this uncommitted arm up to 86 mph, also featuring a breaking ball and changeup. Nonetheless, Musial’s projectability alone is something that makes him an intriguing arm inside this ‘23 class.

EJ Kuster RHP / 1B / Greendale, WI / 2023

Rankings  WI Rank: 80

It seemed like Kuster was hard at work during last offseason and he came into the West Milwaukee Preseason ID with a full head of steam and this is what we had to say about his performance at the time: “He showed an uptick in velocity, sitting 85-86 mph but the unique arm side run was more impressive than the added velocity, averaging over 20 inches of horizontal action. He also surprised with a well above average splitter, usually not seen at this age. He was able to easily kill spin and get downer action with fastball arm speed. Migrating his curveball into more of a hard slider might be the final touch to rounding out a well above average repertoire.”

Adison Tevz RHP / New Berlin Eisenhower, WI / 2023

Rankings  WI Rank: 86

Tevz has long shown an innate ability to flat-out pitch, and this is something that we have seen a handful of times ourselves, and his pitch metrics are also something that allows Tevz standout. At our South Milwaukee Preseason ID, we got the chance to see this firsthand and here is what we had to say: “Tevz was up to 87.6 mph with his fastball, working an aggressive drop and drive delivery with a lower release point. His fastball has significant action; spinning up to 2,350 rpm, with 17 inches of vertical break and 14 inches of horizontal action to pair. His slider spins tight at 2,500 rpm with up to 23 inches of sweep. Tevz polishes off a tough arsenal with a large action, lower spin changeup with 17 inches of horizontal action. Tevs is a tough arm in game and a few ticks on the fastball would make for a lot of tough days to get to him.”

Ethan Daubner RHP / Burlington, WI / 2023

Rankings  WI Rank: 89

Daubner makes for an intriguing look due to his slightly unique delivery style and his metrically above-average stuff, something we saw firsthand at March's Milwaukee Preseason ID: “Standing at 5-11, 193-pounds, and offering an interesting criss cross profile with solid spin. The fastball works up to 88 mph with large vertical (19i), and large horizontal (22i). He also offers a high spin slider at 2500 RPM with 20i of sweep. Daubner rounds out his mix with a high strike rate changeup.”

Tyler Meyer CIF / RHP / Wauwatosa East, WI / 2023

Rankings  WI Rank: 102

Meyer was a winner from the South Milwaukee Preseason I.D. after an above-average pen and here is our rapid analysis regarding that performance… “Standing at 6-foot-5, 200 pounds, the right-hander showed the ability to repeat his delivery despite his long limbs, moving athletically and coiling with a high leg-kick into a strong lower-half downhill. His arm plays short of out the glove and into a ¾ slot, producing a fastball up to 86 mph (2,169 rpm on average). His best secondary offering on the day was a changeup at 71-73 mph, fading heavily to the arm-side with some feel for the zone.”

POSITION PLAYERS

Marco Falletti INF / UTL / Wilmot, WI / 2023

Rankings  WI Rank: 50

Falletti comes in as one of the top uncommitted players in the ‘23 class courtesy of his offensive abilities and he really put his skills on display during July’s Top Prospect Games. Here is what we had to say about that performance:

“Falletti is a name that has caught our staff’s attention multiple times due to his natural feel to hit. Falletti started his day off by running a 7.07 in the 60-yard dash, which is in the top-10 from this talented event. He then moved over to his BP round where he really separated himself. While in the right handed batters box, Falletti works from a stock setup with high hands, then aggressively attacks the baseball with the ability to drive the ball hard to all fields, registering his hardest hit ball at 100.4 mph. His swing then transferred over the gameplay portion of the event as well, as he recorded a pair of hits, one of them being a double, and also used his twitchy athleticism to steal a base as well.”

Nick Argersinger OF / Westosha Central, WI / 2023

Rankings  WI Rank: 54

Like the aforementioned Falletti, Argersinger was also in attendance at our Top Prospect Games event, and this is what our staff had to say about his performance:

”Argersinger is listed at 5-foot-11, 170-pounds with athletic build and more fill coming. He is a smooth moving athlete with excellent body control. He hits with a wide base and high hands. Nick has a short consistent natural trigger showing the ability to see and react to the baseball allowing him to have consistent quality at bats and make solid in zone decisions. Argersinger displays the ability to barrel line drives to all fields. He is an instinctual center-fielder showing the ability to read and react quickly to balls off the bat and take appropriate routes to the ball. Also displays an accurate arm with carry and easy to handle long hops to the fielder on the receiving end of his throws. Argersinger is a winning-type baseball player with a high baseball IQ, always competitive in between the lines.”

Alex Hanneman OF / Appleton East, WI / 2023

Rankings  WI Rank: 61

Hannemann was one of the biggest risers in our last state rankings update, which we released back in September, and despite not moving north in our most recent rankings update he is still one of the class' top uncommitted prospects. One of our previous looks at Hanneman came during the Green Bay Preseason ID, and here is what our staff had to say about his performance:

“From a tall setup, striding with a toe-tap, he repeated hard line-drive contact with exits recorded as high as 98.2 mph. Most of the round, Hanneman worked a pull-side approach with consistent backspin flights, generating batted distances that reached as far as 344 feet, estimated. During his defensive session, he ranged well from side to side with athletic footwork, and made clean transitions and throws with arm strength (89 mph high) from the outfield.”

Drew Brookman OF / Tomah, WI / 2023

Rankings  WI Rank: 63

Back in the winter, Brookman was a winner from our Madison Preseason ID after an upside look at him offensively. This is what our staff had to say regarding his performance: “Brookman is a tall and projectable athlete, listed at 6-foot-3, 185 pounds. After running a 7.10 at the beginning of the day, Brookman stepped into the right-handed box where he works out of a stock setup with soft elbows. Triggering the knob to the ball, and working from a vertical entry that flattens quickly to impact, Brookman made grounded swings with barrel speeds measured at 74.6 mph barrel speed, generating a sweet spot rate of 80 percent during his round of BP. Brookman is a prospect to monitor closely, because a strength gain would substantially enhance his already impressive profile.”

Hunter Szymborski C / Brookfield Central, WI / 2023

Rankings  WI Rank: 64

Szymborski has always shown an advanced defensive skillset behind the plate in the past, registering pop times as low as 2.00 in front of our staff before. While the bat has run a little light in years past we saw it start to turn around this winter where he showed more feel for the barrel throughout his round at the West Milwaukee Preseason ID. At our tourney held at The Rock this past fall, it seemed his hard work was paying off as he tallied multiple hard hit balls from the left-handed batter's box, which only adds to his overall stock as an uncommitted prospect.

Caden Popp SS / 2B / Appleton North, WI / 2023

Rankings  WI Rank: 67

Across many looks this calendar year, Popp has always shown well in front of our staff due to his athleticism and offensive abilities. In our most recent look during the Top Prospect Games event, Popp continued this trend and walked away as a winner from this talented event; this is what our staff had to say about Popp’s performance:

“Popp was a winner from the showcase on Tuesday, as he put on one of the best shows of the day during BP. His hard hit percentage was at 100%, leading all hitters. Popp’s hits led all bats in average distance traveled as well, as he averaged 328 feet per ball he hit. At a 5-foot-11, 180-pound frame, Popp has a quiet body in the batters box, and a bat path that allows him to launch the baseball. His BP session translated to gameplay as well, as the uncommitted to-be senior went 2-for-3 with a triple, walk, and two runs scored. Popp helped raise his status as an offensive power in the 2023 class.”

Keli Grennier SS / 2B / Menomonee Falls, WI / 2023

Rankings  WI Rank: 70

Much like the aforementioned Popp, Grennier was also in attendance at the Top Prospect Games event. Here is what we had to say after his impressive performance: “Grennier consistently performs in front of our staff, and this event was only the latest example. At The Rock Complex, Grennier ran one of the day’s lowest 60-yard dash times (6.95), measured by our Swift devices, and he demonstrated some sound right-handed barrel feel, which is in line with what we see from him in-game often. More notably, Grennier showed reliable middle infield actions with above-average arm strength and accuracy.”

AJ Korth OF / Menasha, WI / 2023

Rankings  WI Rank: 88

Korth debuted in our state rankings back in our spring update after a standout performance at the Green Bay Preseason ID, and here is our staff's thoughts regarding it: “A multi-sport athlete who doubles as Menasha’s starting quarterback, Korth is built at a strong, mature 5-foot-11, 185 pounds. He showed above-average bat strength from the left side of the plate, working hard line-drive contact to all fields and with clear juice off the barrel. He recorded one of the event’s highest hard-hit rates (number of batted balls over 95 mph), measured at 69.2 percent, averaging 88.1 mph off the bat with a 97.7 max exit velocity. Korth’s true elevated power plays to the pull-side, as evidenced by a 350-foot shot he drove to right field in BP. He’s certainly an uncommitted name to follow in the state’s junior class as we approach the spring and summer.”

Rheis Johnson C / Denmark, WI / 2023

Rankings  WI Rank: 117

Across a couple of different looks this past winter, Johnson came away a winner from both; read our staff's analysis regarding Johnson’s performance at the Green Bay Preseason ID: “Sunday, Johnson recorded the highest velocity at his position (79 mph) while popping consistently in the 2.13-2.16 range. He’s built at broad, barrel-chested 6-foot, 200 pounds, and his inherent strength reveals itself most inside of his barrel speed, which reached a 79.3 mph max at this event. His right-handed bat showed well during Denmark’s postseason run in 2021, and he’s become one of Wisconsin’s uncommitted backstops to follow this spring and summer.”

Luke Heinkel 1B / Brookfield East, WI / 2023

Rankings  WI Rank: 123

From 3/13/22: “Heinkel is listed at 6-foot-1, 210 pounds, with a physical, thick frame. In the left-handed box, Heinkel works from a balanced setup and a high handset. He strides short with a vertical entry that flattens with connected rotation, working up into impact and delivering the barrel with violence, generating a peak exits velocity up to 100.9 mph, producing pull-side pop.”

Jack Shepski SS / 2B / Waunakee, WI / 2033

Rankings  WI Rank: 124

Shepski is a top-of-the-order type player with bat-to-ball skills, who back in the winter came away a winner from one of our largest events of the year, the Madison Preseason ID: “Shepski is listed at a muscular 5-foot-9, 170 pounds, with an athletic build, and he began his day with a 7.01 time in the 60-yard dash. Working from a balanced setup, and utilizing an aggressive leg kick, he worked his swing from inside with deeper points of contact. Shepski showed a clean feel for his barrel action and release. He’s a quality bat handler. He recorded barrel speeds of 71 mph, and 93.6 mph exit speeds at a sweet spot rate of 90 percent. He plays as a bouncy defender on the infield with uptempo actions and a big arm across the diamond, topping at 88 mph.”

Bryce Erdmann 2B / OF / Manitowoc Lincoln, WI / 2023

Rankings  WI Rank: 127

In our last rankings update in September, Erdmann made his rankings debut after a strong showing during a Preseason ID event. Even more recently, Erdmann was in attendance at our final event of the fall, the annual Unsigned Senior Showcase, and here is what our staff had to say regarding his performance:

“Erdmann looks to have added some muscle mass to his 6-foot-1, 175-pound frame, still with more room for added strength. Erdmann turned heads during his round of BP with a smooth LH stroke that can do damage, driving baseballs to both gaps also showing some easy power to the pull side. His hardest hit ball recorded a max EV of 90 mph and drove a ball as far as 313 ft., according to Trackman. In both the OF and INF, Erdmann showcased steady actions with the glove working towards the target. On his throws, he topped at 78 mph from the OF and 77 mph from the INF, respectively. After debuting on our most recent 2023 Wisconsin rankings, Erdmann continued to impress during our time in Franklin.”

John Perugini OF / Racine St. Catherine's, WI / 2023

From 1/30/22: “Perugini is a muscular 5-foot-10, 170 pounds, and he averaged some of the day’s hardest contact, with a 94.3 mph max exit velocity measured during his round of BP. His best batted ball traveled an estimated 346 feet, which was also good for the second farthest of the event. Perugini also reached an 86 mph high to home, tops among 2023s, and he recorded a 4.13 down the line from the righty box, too – combining for one of the day’s best statistical performances.”

Hunter Loser C / Kewaskum, WI / 2023

Rankings  WI Rank: 130

From 8/22/22: “Loser is listed at a physical 5-foot-10, 200-pounds made for a good look in his PBR showcase debut. While in the right handed batters box, Loser sets up with athleticism and takes a short, quick path to the ball to consistently drive the ball hard to the entire field, averaging some of the best exit velocity (87.3 mph) of the entire event. He then moved over to the catcher defense portion of the event where his strong arm, one that topped at 75 mph, helped record lows of 2.06 on his quickest throws to second.”

Tyler White 1B / C / Cedarburg , WI / 2023

Rankings  WI Rank: 134

From 3/13/22: “White stands at 5-foot-11, 185 pounds, with a strong frame though he was still able to run a 7.01 in the 60-yard dash, which is a quality mark for both his size and position. From a stock setup with a controlled up-down leg kick, he enters the zone with some vertical orientation, a tight turn, strong hands, and snaps off 80 mph barrel speed at impact. His size and bat speed produced the event’s highest average exit speed (95.1 mph) with a 98.0 max. During the catching session, White popped 2.18 low with a 76 mph high throw out of the crouch.”

Tucker Gegenfurtner 1B / Holmen, WI / 2023

Rankings  WI Rank: 142

From 8/22/22: “Gegenfurtner is listed at 6-foot 210 pounds displaying strength throughout frame. Gegenfurtner impressed during batting practice with the ability to drive the ball to gaps with proper use of his lower half delivery barrel with fast hands. Metrically, he was a huge winner, according to Blast, scoring high-end marks in hand speed (23.6 mph avg.), bat speed (73.4 mph avg.), rotational acceleration (26.6g avg.); he also averaged the event’s highest average exit speed (88.9 mph), and his personal high was measured at 95.7. He also showed well on the mound touching 80 mph with a late running two-seam fastball and a sinker with late depth.

Christian Varsho OF / Altoona, WI / 2023

Rankings  WI Rank: 145

From 8/22/22: “Varsho is a 5-foot-9, 140-pound, left-handed-hitting prospect who is a quick mover in a build that still has some room to grow strength into. Hitting from a stock set up with balance and getting to a strong hitting position, he uses his lower half well to create a flat, short path finishing long through the baseball straying line drives to all fields. He also showcased his athleticism in the outfield with a good carry on his throws with a quick release from. His velocity from the outfield reached a high of 80 mph.”

Hayden Reich 1B / 3B / Sussex Hamilton , WI / 2023

Rankings  WI Rank: 148

From 10/22/22: “Reich is a physical 6-foot-3, 230-pound athlete who showed well on Saturday. Reich impressed with his burst and turnover by running an impressive 7.21 in the 60-yard dash. At the plate, Reich has a short compact swing and uses his lower half efficiently to deliver the barrel and drive balls to gaps. Reich also recorde the best bat speed of the day at 82.6 mph via Blast and the second highest max EV at 98.1 mph. Finally, Reich’s athleticism transferred over to first base during the defensive portion of the event as he impressed with his footwork, soft hands and overall acumen around the bag at first base during defensive work.”
