Granite City's Jake DePew earns Gatorade Player of the Year honors, and other recruiting news



""Granite City catcher Jake DePew was named the 2010 Gatorade Player of the Year recently. The 6-foot, 215-pound DePew enjoyed another monster season for Granite City. The Louisville recruit batted .480 with 17 doubles, 13 homers and 44 RBI. DePew had a 1.070 on-base percentage, a .603 on-base percentage. He walked 27 times and had only eight strikeouts. DePew, who will likely be selected in the MLB Draft, is also arguably the best defensive catcher in the state. As a junior, he batted .558 with 7 homers, 21 doubles and 53 RBI, which earned him second-team All-State honors.

Jack Rogalla, a hard-throwing RHP from Oak Park-River Forest HS, has committed to Binghampton University in N.Y. Rogalla, who features an 85-88 mph fastball, has been the ace for the Huskies this season.

Justin Smykowski, a left-handed hitting shortstop from Shepard HS, has committed to St. Xavier University.

Ray Yong, a left-handed hitting outfielder from York HS, has committed to Carleton College.
