News and Notes from across the state

Zac Pacanowski, a left-handed hitting catcher from Plainfield North HS, has committed to North Central College. Pacanowski led Plainfield North in hitting as a junior, and is a big reason why the Tigers are currently ranked No. 15 in the state.

Matt Kenahan, an INF/RHP from Riverside-Brookfield HS, has committed to Washington University in St. Louis. Kenahan will also play football at Washington.

Jeremy Ryan, a RHP from Gordon Tech HS, has committed to Webster University.

Sunday Special: Mark it in your calendar, there will be a great schedule of games this Sunday for the Southside Challenge, a four-game matchup between Chicago Catholic League vs. East Suburban Catholic Conference teams. The games will be held at Standard Bank Stadium in Crestwood, and begins at 10 a.m.

The Southside Challenge schedule:

No. 19 Providence vs. Marian Catholic, 10 a.m.

No. 16 Mount Carmel vs. Joliet Catholic Academy, 1 p.m.

No. 8 St. Rita vs. Carmel, 4 p.m.

Brother Rice vs. Marist, 7 p.m.

Interesting that the only schools that play on Sunday are the Catholic schools.

Home Run Binge: Benton’s Mark Uhles continues to go deep. On Monday, he connected for an unbelievable four home runs and 10 RBI in a win against Murphysboro. He followed that up on Tuesday with another home run and 3-for-3 day at the plate to give him 9 homers for the year. Not surprisingly, Benton is undefeated at 9-0 this season. Uhles, a catcher, is committed to Rend Lake JC.

Benton, which also features two top-ranked sophomore prospects in RHP Tyler Leffler and C/RHP Michael Trey Garrett, will take on undefeated and No. 2-ranked Harrisburg on Monday.

Conference Streak: No. 3 Chatham Glenwood enters Central State Eight Conference play this week with an 18-game conference winning streak. The Titans’ last conference loss came on May 1, 2008, against Jacksonville. The Titans, who are our pick to win the Class 3A state title, certainly has the talent to run through the Central State 8 this year. Glenwood coach Pat Moomey has a senior-dominated squad, not to mention one of the better junior prospects in the state, RHP Phil Maton.
