Updated top 25 team rankings are released

By Sean Duncan

With the weather what it was last week ? which is to say awful (and getting worse) ? there wasn?t a lot of baseball played. The updated top 25 team rankings reflect the lack of action, as most of the top teams stayed where they were at.

Providence Catholic still holds the top spot after the Celtics easily handled No. 18 Marian Catholic and No. 1-ranked junior LHP Brett Lilek on Sunday. Mundelein and Plainfield North are still unbeaten, and Nazareth Academy checks in at No. 4. No. 5 Mount Carmel (15-1) and No. 6 St. Rita (15-1) both are seemingly impervious to the weather, as both teams were active when most squads were at home playing Xbox.

No. 9 Teutopolis look to be a strong contender to repeat in Class 2A after the Wooden Shoes improved to 13-0, extending their winning streak to 32 games dating back to last season. No. 10 Streamwood climbs a few spots after the Sabres (12-0) stayed unbeaten despite playing a tough schedule last week.

O?Fallon had its 10-game winning streak ended to up-and-coming Alton last week, but I still believe the Panthers are the team to beat in the St. Louis-metro area. Perhaps the biggest surprise this season has been Waterloo, which improved to 13-0. Waterloo should receive a stern test this week with its game against Troy-Triad (12-1), which dropped its first game last week and subsequently fell from the top 25.

There are some newcomers in the top 25 this week. Glenbrook North ? a rare Central Suburban North presence - jumps up to No. 20 after starting the season at 12-1, and perennially strong Rock Falls moves into the No. 21 slot. Leyden (11-0) is still unbeaten, but the Eagles haven?t faced much competition yet, though that will change Saturday when it hosts a doubleheader against Downers Grove South (which has surprisingly struggled this year). Huntley and Mt. Vernon also are newbies in the top 25.
