Ryan Starr: RHP/2B, (2021) Avon, OH. Miami (OH) Commit, 6-foot-1, 190-pound. Advanced on the mound, showed lightning arm speed, also used a high ¾ arm angle and a long arm action. Drop-and-drive type pitcher who shows some effort. Showed an athletic balance point. Curveball (73-75 mph), slider (76-78 mph).Sat with his fastball at 91-93 mph.
6-foot-1, 160-pound right-hander that has much more physical maturation ahead of him. Everything works pretty well on the mound and he generates very easy velocity. Fastball is his best offering right now, sitting 85-87 mph. Although fastball is ahead of breaker/changeup both secondary offerings are serviceable and in the zone. Intriguing arm that has a chance to profile as a starter and likely has another velo jump in there at some point.
Body Type: 6-foot 160-pound RHP with an athletic, wiry frame. Shows lots of room to fill out and remaining projectability.
Mechanical/Delivery Notes: Throws from a ¾ arm slot with a very clean, efficient arm action. Gets most of his velocity from efficient upper body movements. Could add velocity with better use of lower half and hips.
Fastball: 82-84, T86. Fastball jumped out his hand and showed late life to the arm side.
Curveball: 69-71 mph breaking ball showed tight spin, and very good depth.
Changeup: 69-71 mph changeup was very true through the zone.
Pitchability: 3 pitch mix with 2 above average offerings and a developing changeup. Solid command of all 3 pitches.
Role: Starter type. Fastball, breaking ball combo is above average. Creating more depth and action on the changeup could elevate him into a higher tier. Lots of projectability. Definite follow for D1 coaches.
5-foot-11, 130-pound right handed pitcher did a nice job using his legs to drive down the mound with his fastball sitting 76-77 mph and touching 78 a couple times. Starr showed overall good mechanics with a ¾ arm slot but could use some improvement on keeping his arm action and motion the same on his changeup. That will give him more movement on the pitch and create some deception coming off his fastball. His curveball had some good movement to it while sitting around 57-60 mph and he could command the zone well with it. Ryan does have some upside in his abilities as his frame still allows for plenty of growth in the coming years.
