A fastball with rise has a high percentage of backspin. When thrown up in the zone, it is more likely to generate a higher fly ball percentage. Rise+ of 100 is MLB average
Physical: 5-foot-11, 150 pounds; Lean, wiry build. 7.33 runner in the 60. Offensively: LHH. Even setup, with feet just outside his shoulders; has a pre-pitch bat waggle. Loads straight back with an up and down stride for timing. Stays behind the ball while showing a limited effort from the legs. Showed a long swing path with a one-handed finish. More flyballs than line drives and groundballs with a peak exit velocity of 80 MPH via Trackman. Defensively: Starts with a low to the ground setup; uses prep step while active feet. Hands are out in front with a clean transfer. Moderate arm circle from a standard 3/4 arm slot. INF - 71 MPH. Pitching: Kania uses an arm side setup while using a side step. Mid chest leg drive with shoulders above the hips. Has a long stride landing inline with the plate. Long arm from a while showing some scap load, while working through a high 3/4 slot. Spins off 1B side with finish. FB: Peak velo of 76 MPH, while sitting 73-76 MPH; commands both sides. SL: 65-68 MPH; short action.
1/14/17
Defensively, young, developing player shows adequate hands. Benefit would be gained from attacking and playing through baseball while working bottom up and out front.
Offensively, initiates swing from neutral set up with short stride while staying neutral. Their is adequate separation, weight shift and hip turn. There is reaching and some stiffness in landing with stride leg. Swing is fluid with good rhythm and balance. Swing is short with hands working directly to baseball. Overall, young hitter has early makings of solid offensive player.
