Several states in Prep Baseball Report's coverage area have their own scout blog, covering the landscape of high school baseball to no end. The Draft Blog compiles any of those entries pertinent to the current draft year so you can read it in one, central location. The 2017 Major League Baseball Draft takes place in June and there are plenty of prospects within PBR's coverage that anticipate hearing their name called.

Strider Strikes Out 18 In Shutout – 3/21/17

With a couple dozen scouts behind the plate and thunderstorms looming, RHP Spencer Strider (Christian Academy of Knoxville, TN) took the mound for his first home start of the year. Like he did in Florida last week, the Clemson recruited pounded the strike zone and struck out 18 in a shutout.

Kutt Shows Off Signature Slider – 3/20/17

RHP Ryan Kutt (Brother Rice HS, IL) made his first start for top-ranked Brother Rice in chilly temperatures. The 6-foot-2, 180-pounder did what he has done in nearly every outing since his freshman year, throwing a high volume of quality strikes and missed barrels with his slider. In five shutout innings, he struck out seven and walked none, allowing six hits. His slider is the most dominant out pitch in Illinois. He throws it hard and for strikes at 81-84 with sharp, late two-plane break.

Miller Logs Four, Strikes Out Nine In First Start – 3/20/17

RHP Bobby Miller (McHenry HS, IL), a Louisville recruit, made his first start in front of a number of scouts Monday night. He has a strong, athletic frame at 6-foot-5, 190 pounds and works from a 3/4 slot with a long draw on the backside.

Enlow Tosses Shutout – 3/17/17

RHP Blayne Enlow (St. Amant HS, LA) cruised through his latest outing, striking out 12, walking none and allowing just five hits in a complete game. The 6-foot-3, 165-pounder has a clean, easy arm action through a high-3/4 release. He pitches with little effort and smooth rhythm.

Detmers Goes Four In 2017 Debut – 3/16/17

LHP Reid Detmers (Chatham-Glenwood HS, IL), a Louisville recruit and the No. 41 prospect in the Overall Rankings, made his first start of the year in front of more than 20 scouts on a frigid night. He works from a high-3/4 slot with a long, quick arm action. He pitches with good tempo and balance throughout his delivery while showing advanced pitchability and feel for a three-pitch mix.

Morris Using Wood In Games – 3/16/17

Signability is a major factor for high school prospects in the draft and scouts spend a lot of time trying to gauge a kid’s interest in pro ball. SS Tanner Morris (Miller School, VA) may be hinting at his desires, as the Virginia recruit is swinging a wood bat in games. Morris attracted a dozen or so scouts on back-to-back chilly days in Raleigh, NC, and went 2-for-7 with two runs scored and two stolen bases.

Butler Shuts Down Durant, Strikes Out 12 – 3/13/17

LHP Jordan Butler (Alonso HS, FL) was lights out through five innings in a 10-0 win over Durant HS, FL. The Florida recruit has a lean, athletic frame standing at 6-foot-1, 180 pounds with a loose, quick arm action. He started off the game sitting mostly 90-91 mph, touching 92 occasionally.

Zamora Looks The Part – 3/10/17

SS Freddy Zamora (Killian HS, FL) was impressive throughout a weekend game, both offensively and defensively. The right-handed hitting shortstop showed his range to the left, with sure hands and an above average arm on his only play in the game. Offensively, he was 1-for-3 on the day with an RBI double. He has rhythm and a big leg kick, but stayed on time against a good young arm and showed feel for the barrel.

Beck, Bailey Produce With The Lights On – 3/8/17

A mild evening in the Triad area of North Carolina brought a throng of scouts to see a matchup of two defending state champions. On display were OF Austin Beck (North Davidson HS, NC) and C Patrick Bailey (Wesleyan Christian Academy, NC).

Gore Fans 10 In Front Of Big Scouting Crowd – 3/7/16

Approximately 75 scouts, including at least eight scouting directors and a handful of special assistants, packed the seats behind the plate in Whiteville, NC, to see LHP Mackenzie Gore (Whiteville HS, NC) take the mound. All in attendance were treated to a strong pitching performance as the East Carolina recruit struck out 10 while allowing just three hits and a hit batter in 6.2 innings pitched.

Santana Shows Upside – 3/7/17

RHP Christian Santana (American Heritage HS, FL) has a slender frame with slightly wider shoulders and pitches from a high-3/4 slot with a fastball that sat 88-92 on Tuesday against Calvary Christian Academy, FL.

Archbishop McCarthy Flexes Pitching Muscle – 3/6/17

Against Westminster Christian Academy, FL, the Mavericks of Archbishop McCarthy HS, FL, sent three arms to the hill, including two 2017s with aspirations of being drafted. Starting for the Mavericks was RHP Daniel Federman, a Miami recruit, who allowed three hits in three innings while striking out six.

Relieving Federman was 3B/RHP Joe Perez, also a Miami recruit. Perez was lights out and showed why he has a chance to be an early-round pick in June.

Jones Attracting Attention – 3/6/17

There was some thought that SS Greg Jones Jr. (Cary HS, NC) was flying under the radar, but that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore. A UNC Wilmington recruit, he has gained size and strength since last summer, standing more in the 6-foot-1, 165-pound range. In a game against East Wake HS, NC, Jones was playing in front of a dozen scouts, made up of mostly crosscheckers and a couple scouting directors. He went 2-for-3 with a three-run home run in his first at-bat.

Leach Logs First Bullpen – 3/2/17

RHP Landon Leach (Pickering HS, ON) threw his first bullpen of 2017 on Thursday. It consistent of about 20-25 pitches, all of which were fastballs. He is noticeably stronger, now listed at 6-foot-4, 220 pounds.

Bonnin Tosses Five No-Hit Innings – 3/2/17

RHP Bryce Bonnin (Barbers Hill HS, TX) was dominant through five innings in a 5-1 win over Langham Creek HS, TX. An Arkansas recruit, he is currently ranked No. 54 in the PBR Draft 100. The right-hander stands at 6-foot-1, 180 pounds, with broad shoulders, long arms, a strong lower half, and high-waisted frame. He works from a high-3/4 slot with a long, clean and loose arm stroke. Bonnin has an athletic delivery with quick tempo and energy down the mound.

Campbell Collects Two Hits In Opener – 2/28/17

SS Noah Campbell (Cardinal Gibbons HS, NC), currently the No. 100 prospect in the PBR Draft 100, made his regular season debut against Leesville Road HS, NC. The South Carolina recruit went 2-for-3 with a walk, double, two runs scored and a stolen base. He has a lean frame with broad shoulders at 6 feet, 190 pounds.

Ruth Up To 96, Showcases Plus Slider – 2/25/17

A couple dozen scouts and crosscheckers filed into Langham Creek HS, TX, to see RHP Tylor Fischer (Langham Creek HS, TX) on Saturday night. Fishcer has a long, tall frame with flexibility and looseness. He pitches with a high leg kick and high-3/4 slot. His fastball was typically had downhill plane, but did flash some arm-side life at times when it was up.

Turney Quiet In Doubleheader – 2/25/17

It took a few at-bats before OF Cole Turney (Travis HS, TX) swung the bat, as he walked in his first two trips and saw a total of 10 pitches. In his third plate appearance he turned on an inside pitch, hammering it foul before staying back a tick longer and smoking a single through the right side on the next offering.

Eder Touches 95, Strikes Out Eight – 2/24/17

LHP Jake Eder (Calvary Christian Academy, FL) came out electric in the first inning, showing a clean and easy delivery. As he found his timing and extension, the fastball climbed from 90-93 mph to touching 94-95.

RHP Robert Burke (Zachary HS, LA) logged three innings in Zachary’s season opener, striking out two while allowing two hits and a walk. A Northwestern State recruit, he has an athletic frame with a strong lower half at 6-foot-4, 200 pounds.
