Michigan Scouting Director and Michigan Editor in Chief

The NCAA early signing period started November 11th, 2015 and will run through the 18th. With the start of the fall signing period upon us, Jake Sabol, the director of scouting for PBR Michigan, breaks down the top recruiting classes based on in-state prospects. Beyond the surface, we drill down deeper into immediate impact players, sleepers in the class, and other behind the scenes information that went into a player choosing their college program.

Over the next two weeks, we will breakdown the in-state recruiting hauls for Division II, Division III, NAIA, and JUCO programs as well as other programs that have signed players from the Mitten state.

If you are a senior, it isn't too late. College programs are still looking. Make sure you check out the list of remaining events this winter by clicking here.

Overview: The University of Michigan’s Head Baseball Coach, Eric Bakich, addressed their pitching staff in a big way, signing three of the top five ranked arms in the state. The top 2016 recruit in the state of Michigan will wear the maize and blue for his college career, unless Major League Baseball has other plans for Karl Kauffmann. The 21st nationally ranked high school prospect by Prep Baseball Report is also rated 9th among right-handed pitching prospects. Kauffmann’s fastball has been clocked up to 95 mph, but he has also learned how to command the zone at 90-91. Kauffmann also features a tight curveball and a changeup with arm side arm. Along with Kauffmann, the Wolverines also added the top lefty in the state in Tommy Henry. Henry was a dominant force during the high school season, leading Portage Northern to the state finals as both a starting pitcher, and a productive outfielder. Henry has an excellent 3-pitch mix and shows tremendous pitchability. His fastball sits 85-87 mph, but has been reported to have touched 89 mph. 6-foot-3 Jack Weisenburger completes U of M’s in-state group on the mound, while catching prospect Harrison Salter from Division 2 State Champion, Orchard Lake St. Mary’s, will work directly with these three arms for years to come.
