12.12.20 Preseason ID - Upperclassmen Spotlights 

 

Sam Lawson (1B/LHP, Riverview Academy, 2021)

Physical Profile/Projection - 6-0, 163lbs. Broad across the shoulders. Lanky frame, long limbs. Frame will support additional development. 

Offensive Analysis - Stance just outside the shoulders, short leg kick and stride length. Quick hand load. Low hand set at launch. Slightly uphill path, line drive/fly ball contact. Short tow hand finish. 76.52 mph EV. 6.91 sixty time (laser)

Defensive Analysis - Developing footwork, stop and start rhythm. Firm hands, deliberate exchange. Long arm action, accurate throws. 61 mph INF Velo.

Delivery/Mechanics - Controlled tempo delivery. Drop and drive delivery. Avg. arm speed. Lands closed of his line, works through an OTT arm slot. Abbreviated arm arc on the back side. 

Pitches - FB 66 mph; ASR, controlled in the zone. CB 65 mph, early break, loose action. CH 65 mph, fade to the arm side.

 

Hudson Robinson (INF/RHP, York Comprehensive HS, 2021)

Physical Profile/Projection - 5-9, 150lbs. Smaller stature with lean build. Sloped shoulders, proportional build.

Offensive Analysis - Athletic stance, bend in the knees. Hands load back into a slight arm barred position. Dives into contact with a downhill path. Level one hand finish. 81 mph EV. 6.85 sixty time. 

Defensive Analysis - Sure handed INF. Adequate range, clean exchanges and functional footwork. Showed the ability to make throws from multiple arm slots with accuracy. 2B profile. 

Delivery/Mechanics - Repeatable compact delivery, lands on his line and works through a OTT arm slot. 3Q abbreviated arm arc on the back side. Moderate quickness in the arm. Falls off the glove side on follow through.

Pitches - FB 75 mph showed consistent location in the lower half of the zone. CB 67 mph; slurve tendencies, some feel for location and ability to move the pitch around with intent. CH 63 mph similar hand speed, ASR action with some heavy life.

 

Dylan Massey (3B, Gilbert, 2022)

Physical Profile/Projection - 5-10, 185lb. Thick build, barrel chest. Strong lower half, moderate projection remaining.  

Offensive Analysis - Tall slightly open stance, short quick stride to a balanced position. Controlled hand load. Launches uphill through contact with a two hand finish. Some bat speed present, line drive/fly ball contact. 88.9 mph EV. 7.60 sixty time.

Defensive Analysis - 3B; short quick footwork. Gets himself into a low, square fielding position. Wants to maintain his momentum through the process. Funnels through a position at the mid section, gets the ball out cleanly from a H3Q arm slot. Avg. arm strength. Avg. lateral movements. 

 

 

Henry Mitchell (SS/RHP, Albuquerque Academy, 2022)

Physical Profile/Projection - 6-0, 187lbs. Broad square shoulders. Lean strength, additional development likely as he continues to mature. Flashes twitch at times. 

Offensive Analysis - Physical presence. Wide stance, short leg kick and stride length. Works uphill through contact, muscles the barrel through the zone. Quick hands, high two hand finishes with extension. Line drive contact, gap to gap approach. 91 mph EV. 6.91 sixty time.

Defensive Analysis - Quick, confident hands in the infield. Smooth actions, clean consistent transfers. 86 mph INF velo. Throws showed carry and accuracy from the left side of the infield. 

Delivery/Mechanics - RHP, short rocker step to an athletic balance point. Quick tempo delivery with moderate effort. Uses an 3Q arm arc on the back side to work through a H3Q arm slot. Falls off to his glove side at finish. 

Pitches - Attacked the zone with a firm FB up to 87 mph. Pitch showed life out of the hand and jumped at the plate. Mixed a firm SL with late two tier bite at 75-76. Power pitch. 

 

 

Cooper Robinson (RHP, Pinewood Prep, 2022)

Physical Profile/Projection - 6-2, 175lbs. Large projectable build. Broad shoulders, long limbs. Physical upside and projection present. 

Delivery/Mechanics: Rocker step into a high balance point. Lands slightly closed of his line. Abbreviated 3/4 arm arc on the back side. Small rotation at the top. Drop and drive delivery. Scap load. Extension down the mound, H3Q arm slot. Some effort in the delivery. Falls off to the glove side on finish. 

Pitches:  Life to the FB at 86 mph. ASR action. Location consistent in the lower half of the zone. Attacks with the pitch. CB 72-78 mph with 11/5 break. Firm offering. Flashed swing and miss potential. Firm CH thrown with matching hand speed and fade to the arm side.

 

 

 

Walker Taylor (1B/OF, May River, 2022)

Physical Profile/Projection - 5-11, 175lbs. Square shoulders, high waist. Developing strength has trended up over the last few months. 

Offensive Analysis - Feel for the barrel, uses the whole field. Simple approach with balance throughout. Flat path, has started to develop a slightly uphill finish. Aggressive bat speed at times. Full rotation in the lower half. 86 mph EV (Trackman) Line drive approach, contact first. Has started taking some more aggressive swings with powerful intent. 

Defensive Analysis - Utility OF/INF has worked out in the OF as well as at 1B. Trending up across the board. OF; Smooth actions in the OF. Controlled footwork, pro step, and followthrough. Consistent exchange, smooth footwork. 1B; confident actions. Looks the part of his natural position. Quick feet around the bag, clean exchanges, good hands. 76 mph INF Velo. 71 mph OF Velo. Longer arm action. Clean, H3Q slot. Throws from the outfield showed good accuracy with some arm side fade. 

 

 

 

Calib Thompson (LHP/1B, West Ashley, 2022)

Physical Profile/Projection - 5-11, 155lbs. Slender build with a projectable frame. Additional development likely as he matures. 

Offensive Analysis - Simple approach, tall stance from the left side. Medium high leg lift with a longer stride. Lags the barrel on an uphill path to contact. Full rotation in the lower half. Hands load down slightly and turn the barrel into a more vertical position at launch. One hand follow through with good extension. 82 mph EV. 7.15 sixty time. 

Defensive Analysis - Worked out at 1B with solid avg footwork, playing himself into a consistent fielding position. Smooth transfers. Quick footwork around the bag. 3Q arm action. 68 mph INF Velo.

Delivery/Mechanics - Tempo was consistent throughout, worked to a balance point at the belt. Full arm arc on the backside. Lands square and works through a 3Q arm slot with avg. arm speed. Follow through pulls him off to the glove side. 

Pitches - FB 76 mph with running action to the arm side. Consistent location in the zone. CH as a second pitch with feel. Heavy action, drops the arm slot slightly but hand speed matches and pitch shows deception. (66 mph)
