2016 Spring Team Preview: Coloma Comets

Team Name: Coloma Comets
Head Coach: Kevin VanPeteghem (72-73, 5th season)
Division: III
2015 Record: 19-18
Conference Record: 4-6 in Wolverine West (now playing in SAC Lakeshore Division)
Returning Starters/Pitchers: 6/4

Historical Accomplishments:

  • 1983 State Runner up
  • 2003, 2005 District Titles

2016 Team Strengths: We will have pitching depth. Justin Pullins and Mathew Kelley came on strong last year on the mound and are ready to step into bigger roles. We have a hard working group of guys that have accepted a “grinder” type of mentality. Our biggest strength is that we believe in each other and try to win innings throughout games. Chase Potter brings a lot of excitement and versatility, he hits tremendously well and runs the bases extremely well while being able to catch, play shortstop, or pitch at a high level.

2016 Team Weaknesses: We have a number of guys playing new positions and having to take on new roles and we will see how they adapt. Some of our leaders are gone, including Caleb Hester who is now pitching at Eastern Michigan University. New guys will have to step into leadership roles.

Top Returning Players: The ones mentioned above. Chase Potter is clearly a college ball player and if Justin Pullins continues to develop secondary pitches he has a lively arm that could translate to playing time at the next level. Mathew Kelley continues to make strides and is a very viable #2 pitcher with talent to play at the next level. Calvin Starnes is a very exciting young player who really got his feet wet as a freshman last year, but has potential to be very special on the mound.
